The Truth About Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It, and How Far She'll Go to Become President, by Edward Klein

Hillary Rodham Clinton is the most polarizing figure in American politics. Love her or hate her, everyone has a strong opinion about the former first lady turned senator who is almost certainly going to run for president in 2008.

Despite more than a dozen years in the national spotlight and more than a dozen unauthorized books about her, she has managed to keep many secrets from the public especially about her turbulent marriage and its impact on her career. There have been plenty of rumors about what Hillary and Bill Clinton did behind closed doors, but never a definitive book that exposes the truth.

Bestselling author Edward Klein draws on rare access to inside sources to reveal what Hillary knew and when she knew it during her years as first lady, especially during her husband’s impeachment. Klein’s book, embargoed until publication, will break news about the choices and calculations she has made over the years. It will also prove that she lied to America in her bestselling autobiography Living History.

When she was just a little girl, Hillary Rodham dreamed of becoming the first female president, and her lifelong dream is almost within reach. But just as the swift boat veterans convinced millions of voters that John Kerry lacked the character to be president, Klein’s book will influence everyone who is sizing up the character of Hillary Clinton.

From Publishers Weekly
Reading this book-instead of just the pre-pub discussion around it-makes one thing perfectly clear: it will not, as has been hoped or feared, do for any Clinton presidential campaign what Unfit For Command did for the Kerry one. This clip & paste job by a former editor of the New York Times magazine is unlikely to change a single mind, let alone vote-to paraphrase the political commentator, conservative Tucker Carlson, readers who already hate lightning-rod Clinton know why they hate her. Those who like her won't find their minds changed by any of the ersatz revelations in this ultimately uninteresting book. Klein, also the author of several books about the Kennedys, conducted some live interviews for this one, but he also borrowed liberally (pun intended) from dozens of published books and articles. What "news" he turns up is too minor to make even Entertainment Tonight: the former First Lady drinks decaffeinated coffee, likes to sleep late in the morning (unlike her early-riser husband) and is self conscious about her thick legs. Oh, and as a Wellesley student in the 1970s, she had lesbian friends and didn't shave her legs or underarms. Klein seems intent on rehashing the rehash in this too-boring-to-even-be-execrable title. While glossing over such provocative-and substantive-Clinton issues as Whitewater, Travel-gate and Vince Foster's suicide, he concentrates nearly half of his 250 pages on-you guessed it-Monica Lewinsky. His central point: Hillary wasn't surprised, as she wrote in her memoir Living History, by an early morning confession from Bill about Monica. She had in fact known about the president's chronic womanizing-and Monica specifically-for some time. Her "wronged wife" act was just that: spin to garner sympathy for her own political ends. It's certainly true that Hillary came through the Monica mess as a more sympathetic character to many voters, but I don't remember Clinton so much as cultivating a wronged wife image as having one thrust upon her by the media. And in any case, who cares? There's no doubt that the Lewinsky affair was embarrassing and hurtful to the then-First Lady; she neither created nor enjoyed it. Besides, who hasn't put a different face on painful personal behavior that somehow went public? Another of Klein's points is that Hillary is ambitious-and that in her quest for power, she has put off lots of people including, he says, the revered late New York senator, Daniel Patrick Moynihan and his campaign manager wife, Liz. (Moynihan's daughter has denied any problems in her parents' relationship with the senator.) Again, the word that comes to mind is "Duh." I'd be tempted to pull out that old saw about how if Clinton were a man, "ambitious" would be a compliment, but since she's a woman, it's a synonym for that word that rhymes with "rich." I'd do that, but that would be too Klein-ian of me: superficial, clichd and gender obsessed. But maybe I'm wrong about one thing: perhaps The Truth will change some votes. After reading it, those who've been tepid about the senator might indeed rally around her. After all, Klein makes it clear that any time someone tries to humiliate her publicly, she somehow manages to come out on top. -Sara Nelson.

From the Back Cover
"This is not a scandal book intended merely to gratify the reader’s salacious interests. Instead, Mr. Klein has written a serious political and psychological biography of the most likely next Democratic nominee for president—and thus, quite plausibly I fear, the next president of the United States."
—Tony Blankley, The Washington Times

"We’ve already seen what [the media] are willing to do to protect Hillary Clinton. They trashed a perfectly respectable, though highly critical, biography of Hillary by veteran newsman Ed Klein."
—Fred Barnes, The Weekly Standard

"The press is not curious about what Klein is saying. They are circling the wagons, trying to defend Hillary."
—Rush Limbaugh

"I’ve never in the history of this program had more demands to cancel a guest."
—Sean Hannity

Better than anticipated
By InvestorMinded
I've heard alot about this book - mainly about how poorly written, how factually inaccurate and how malicious it was. That surprised me because I know that Ed Klein is not some conservative nutjob. He is in fact a product of The New York Times and other established media. So my curiosity was raised.. and I read the book for myself.

What I found is a well-written, easy read, and most importantly a reasoned and documented discussion of the women who may well be our next president. Unlike some other reviews, I find it important to know about the personal characteristics of one who would be president. I felt it was important to know whether George W. Bush neglected his duty in the Air National Guard, and I felt it was important to know whether John Kerry lied about or fabricated his Vietnam experiences. So I feel it's also important to know what Hillary's core values are, how she developed those beliefs, how she applied those beliefs and how she's adjusted those beliefs. This book gives some of the best insight into those questions.

Klein does not appear to be on some kind of political rant, nor does his background suggest it. It is clear that he's found some disturbing elements of Hillary's background (both politcal and personal) and is highlighting them. That is a worthy and necessary job.

That Hillary's people don't like what he's written is understandable. The lengths that they've gone to discredit and destroy the author is not. But that is another part of Hillary's disturbing elements.

Read the book for yourself. I'm not sure if Hillary's people have.

She is worse than I thought!!!
By samman45
This is not for Hillary lovers. Her quest for power is unbelievable. I knew she was a liar, but a pathological liar. She never had motherhood skills. She has known about Bill and his girls from the very beginning. For better polling, she plays the victim, when she knew of every affair Bill ever had. If every voter read this book, she would never get elected to the Presidency. She is clearly a dirt bag.

Update 8/25/2013

She now admits to having a lot of baggage. She will not however, admit to the complicity in the Benghazi incident. I think she belongs in jail. She said during a Senate hearing, "what difference does it make?" The difference it makes is that she may very well be culpable for her lack of responsibility during the incident. She also allowed the sex scandals in the State Department on her watch but says nothing about it. Perhaps she is a good lawyer but not a good citizen and therefore would not make a good President. What did she really accomplish as Secretary of State? What happened to her health plan when her husband was President? Has she ever really done anything to help this country in any way?

Truth About Hillary
By anonymous
If the author has been blackballed from the Mainstream (Clinton) media, which includes Network TV, and the print media, which he certainly was, and his book is slated to appear on the NY Times Bestseller list for the fifth straight week, imagine the outpouring of interest this book would receive if it just enjoyed normal reviews.

My feelings and beliefs about HRC have been more than substantiated as I read this thoroughly proofessional expose. She may be considered to be smart, but I can't remember hearing praises for her good character and just plain honesty. It also is embarassing that we have the NY Times downplaying Ed Kleins novel while it is enjoying its rightful place on the best seller list in that very same paper, and that they have the nerve to claim they represent the American people.

In my opinion, Mr. Klein deserves high praises for this courageous portrayal of the truth about Hillary, when he knew he would be landslided by the Clinton media machine.

A Great Primer
By John W
I've worked about half way through this so far, and I've learned a ton that will help me in managing my business's books already. I'm not a student, I'm just an average guy running a small business by the seat of his pants and really needed to get a handle on my book-keeping. If you stick with it, you may well find it exciting to learn what it takes to keep better records of transactions and accounts. This book is a De Facto standard in teaching fundamental accounting to new students, and it isn't hard to see why.

This text was VERY helpful. The illustrations and examples were enough to explain the topic without havung to read the entire book.. Also the problems given at the end of each section were very good. Some were tough; however, the author starts you out with easy problems and works up to the more difficult ones. This text definitely is a good learning aid.

At the age of 12, his father decided to move the family to their ethnic homeland of Jerusalem to teach them the Islamic culture and Arabic traditions. There, he set out upon his journey to seek the truth about the true God. He began to learn about Islam and the Arab culture and began to learn about Christianity. This was the beginning of his intriguing story of conversion. After setting his heart to find out the truth about God, he found himself in a difficult crossroad in life. One road led to life as usual with family, riches and Mohammed’s Islam and the other road led to the completely opposite direction.

excelent in every sense
By KAIYA GAO
I thought this might be a whole story of how this man left Islam to become a Christian but it isn't. Somebody told Hazem that he loved more Jesus than he hated Islam and that is so true! You can breath life as you walk with him the amazing path of this love story unfolded in each line of this book. I enjoyed every page!

A Book to Use During Your Morning Prayer Time
By G. G. Gladden
Hazem Farraj initially caught my eye when I was flipping through the T.V. channels. He was on with Perry Stone, in fact, I don't recall what program it was, it just immediately caught my attention and for some reason, when I saw the two, I had to stop and watch. I am so glad that I was obedient to the unctioning of the Holy Spirit because as a result of that T.V. show, I felt an immediate urgency to buy Hazem's book. Maybe it’s because I have been on a year long quest studying Islam but I believe it was more than that. Mohammed, Jesus & Me is a fascinating book, to read how such a young man made a stand for Christ truly exemplifies a faith worthy of emulation. Hazem has given up his precious family, and in spite of the fact that his conversion to Christianity poses a possible death sentence on him, he has shown that his walk with the Lord is more important to him than life itself. What a faith!

Chapter 8: Jesus, brought me to my knees, the approach Hazem uses to witness to his Muslim brothers and sisters about Christ is so simple, yet so profound! What a way to tell others about the goodness of our Lord and Savior! This chapter so impressed me that I now use it when I am journaling in my prayer book. It is especially prolific when I am praising the Lord. Hazem was able to capture every superlative to describe our Lord and Savior and I am thankful for that, for it has changed me and help me to grow further in my faith. A read far worth the cost.

A riveting account of a life completely surrendered to Jesus Christ.
By Kaycee Egbuta
I love this book! It powerfully portrays the essence of who Jesus is and His love for us in a way that not many other Christian inspirational books are able to. In these last days, God is at work to bring all who are lost into His kingdom and I have no doubt that Pastor Farraj's calling and ministry are extremely relevant for such a time as this. This book alone, is proof of that.

The Boy Kings: A Journey into the Heart of the Social Network, by Katherine Losse

Kate Losse was a grad school refugee when she joined Facebook as employee #51 in 2005. Hired to answer user questions such as "What is a poke?" and "Why can't I access my ex-girlfriend's profile?" her early days at the company were characterized by a sense of camaraderie, promise, and ambition: Here was a group of scrappy young upstarts on a mission to rock Silicon Valley and change the world.
Over time, this sense of mission became so intense that working for Facebook felt like more than just a job; it implied a wholehearted dedication to "the cause." Employees were incentivized to live within one mile of the office, summers were spent carousing at the company pool house, and female employees were told to wear T-shirts with founder Mark Zuckerberg's profile picture on his birthday. Losse started to wonder what this new medium meant for real-life relationships: Would Facebook improve our social interactions? Or would we all just adapt our behavior to the habits and rules of these brilliant but socially awkward Internet savants who have become today's youngest power players? Increasingly skeptical, Losse graduated from customer service to the internationalization team--tasked with rolling out Facebook to the rest of the world-- finally landing a seat right outside Zuckerberg's office as his personal ghostwriter, the voice of the boy king.
This book takes us for the first time into the heart of this fast-growing information empire, inviting us to high-level meetings with Zuckerberg; lifting the veil on long nights of relentless hacking and trolling; taking us behind the scenes of raucous company parties; and introducing us to the personalities, values, and secret ambitions of the floppy-haired boy wonders who are redefining the way we live, love, and work. By revealing here what's really driving both the business and the culture of the social network, Losse answers the biggest question of all: What kind of world is Facebook trying to build, and is it the world we want to live in?
***
"Logging on to Facebook that first day, in retrospect, was the second, and to date the last, time that any technology has captured my imagination. The first was when Apple advertised the first laptop, the PowerBook, in the 1990s--with the words, 'What's on your PowerBook?'
"'World domination, ' my teenaged self- answered instinctively. That's what these devices were made for, I thought: so small and yet so powerful, so capable of linking quickly to and between everything else in the world. From the laptop, I could write and distribute information faster than ever before. It was intoxicating to imagine, and Facebook's sudden, faithful rendering in 2004 of the physical world into the virtual felt the same. What could you do, now that you could see and connect to everyone and everything, instantly?
"But what, also, could be diminished by such quick access? In the realm of ideas, it seemed easy: Who wouldn't want to distribute and discuss ideas widely? However, in the realm of the personal, it seemed more complicated. What was the benefit of doing everything in public? Is information itself neutral, or do different types of information have different values, different levels of expectation of privacy, different implications for distribution and consumption? Should all information be shared equally quickly and without regard to my relationship to it? And, finally, and most important, as we ask whenever we begin a new relationship with anything, would this be good for me?"

Review
"In her dark, hypnotic memoir of working at Facebook during its rising years, Katherine Losse tests Mark Zuckerberg's dogmatic belief in transparency's inherent good by removing the privacy controls on his own life. The result is a reluctantly Machiavellian guidebook to Silicon Valley -- and a strong endorsement for maintaining a separate social life rather than a fully public "pics or it didn't happen" one." --"The Daily"

""The Boy Kings" needs a place on your summer reading list. Losse made me think twice about how I socialize with people, and how exactly that came to be--and it just might encourage you to hop offline and appreciate non-virtual reality." "--Glamour

Not the tell-all it's portrayed as, but...
By Aphasia17
The media attempted to show this book as a tell-all about the culture of working for Facebook (which it does, to an extent) and seeing what really drives Mark Zuckerberg and makes him tick (which it doesn't). First and foremost, this book is about the adventures of Kate Losse and her journey up the ladder of Facebook, a story made all the more remarkable considering the male-dominated culture she worked in.

Losse takes us on a ride that begins with a Johns Hopkins graduate joining Facebook's customer-support team, through to her promotion to the Internationalization team, and shooting all the way up to being Zuckerberg's official ghostwriter. The story goes back and forth between reading like a description of her work culture and reading like a lengthy diary entry, as she goes from stories of AIM chats (using AIM at work was a requirement) and long hours into the night (as the engineers were often required when writing algorithms) to parties in Las Vegas and annual trips to the Coachella music festival.

Although the book is extremely well written, it is not particularly memorable and at times Losse's thoughts, although thought-provoking, become repetitive as she constantly questions whether Facebook is really bringing people together or turning the world into one big virtual reality. If you've seen the movie "The Social Network", then very little of the information presented here - about Facebook's work culture as well as Zuckerberg himself - will come as a surprise. That is the main criticism I have for the book - you don't learn much that you didn't already know or could guess at. The culture is very much like a frat house, with the guys often playing games like chess and beer-pong and sometimes sending erotic messages (usually in fun, but not always) to the female workers. Parties are a regular occurrence and the place in general seems as if it is, as Losse herself says, "trying to stay nineteen".

Some reviewers have said that Losse comes across as being bitter towards her co-workers and the work environment. I don't see that at all. She simply was a very different person to most of her co-workers, as she relied as much on the physicalities and realness of the outside world as much as the engineers relied on their computer screens and other forms of technology.

If you can borrow this book or read it on a friend's kindle, I'd say go for it. Otherwise, rest safely in the knowledge that you aren't missing out on an essential read about Facebook or Mark Zuckerberg.

Facebook and Philosophy
By Helene Ossipov
This is a thoughtful book about technology, our fetishization of it, and what that can mean in the long run. Clearly written by a person well-grounded in the humanities, this book explores the explosive growth of Facebook with its need for data and more data. The engineers are given free rein to come up with applications, such as photo and video, but never question why they are doing it or what the moral or ethical implications of it are. Users gleefully give over their private data to a company, they live their lives online and in public, but think little of it. Ms. Losse gives an example early on: at a party, she posed covered in a bearskin, doubled over with laughter as Mr. Zuckerberg points to her. The photo is posted on Facebook and the engineers are delighted that they can post the photo, since the app had just been developed; it's the technical achievement that is important, not what the photo is; it could have been a photo of a can of soup for all it mattered. But Ms. Losse considers how the photo could be (mis)interpreted by someone who doesn't know the context. This is not a tell-all; anyone looking for dirt won't find it here. She is grateful for the oppportunities she has had at the company and the financial security it has given her, but she begins to question the direction in which the company is going. The author wants us to consider that just because something can be done does not mean that it should be done. A very worthwhile read.

every privileged engineer should read The Boy Kings
By Amazon Customer
If you think the tech sector is a utopian meritocracy, you're way off. Kate Losse shares her experience as an early Facebook employee outside the sacred grove of the engineering department, where customer service and project management people, mostly women, are treated with a level of respect normally associated with office furniture. It was painful to read parts of this, because of some similarity in culture to where I work, and because it doesn't have a happy ending where any of the institutional problems are solved. This is real life, after all, not a carefully curated series of stream posts.
