The Logic of Conformity: Japan's Entry into International Society (Japan and Global Society), by Tomoko T. Okagaki

In The Logic of Conformity, Tomoko T. Okagaki examines Japan’s entry into the European state system in the late nineteenth century. Okagaki focuses on the extraordinary degree of conformity that Japan demonstrated in accommodating itself to Western norms of international relations within a very short period of time. By introducing a political science perspective to the study of Japan’s modernization, which has heretofore been studied mostly as a historical subject, she emphasizes the significance of contextual factors that constrained the ways in which Japan entered international society.

As Okagaki shows, while the international system defined the mode of Japan’s socialization in many ways, Japan’s entry also symbolized a transformation of the international system from that of Euro-dominance to legal equality. A sophisticated and significant contribution to the literature on state building and the history of international relations, The Logic of Conformity is a fascinating study of how the concept of sovereignty is reshaped by the entrance of newcomers.

A gold mine (probably)
By Sceptique500
For me, this book has been a revelation. It would rank close to the top in my personal list of “books of the year”. In just 120 easy and well written pages, the author has developed a coherent conceptualization of Japan’s late XIXth century modernization and subsequent successful entry into international society. The “one damn fact and Japanese name after another” has yielded to a coherent and dynamic story I can grasp and manipulate easily. “The logic of conformity” is a powerful topos for describing a complex historical process.

The author uses the International Relations tradition of the UK to explain Japan’s trajectory as “state socialization”. Once a “state system” has emerged – as after Westphalia – newcomer states like Japan must adapt to it, following a “logic of conformity.” Statesmen face both external and internal constraints, but they are not just victims of the circumstances: “The leaders needed to comprehend the requirements for membership and find ways to mobilize and transform dormant domestic institutions into those suited to the European criteria in order to obtain full sovereign statehood.” (Pg. 6) It was a voluntaristic approach – albeit under constraints.

Two essential factors (a) timing, and (b) isomorphic natural and institutional structures of the country, are explicitly included as explanatory variables. “National leaders stand between the external and the internal environment and play both international and domestic games simultaneously. Leaders successfully cope with two-level games…” (Pg. 23) As a result, the author conceptualizes the process as consisting of three stages: adoption, absorption, and adaptation to the international rules. One obtains a unique path-dependent outcome, which is far more than a “just so” story.

I’m enthusiastic, because this kind of conceptualization is new to me. 30 schematic pages of theory is just what a trainer would order to a historical pilates neophyte. My ampler reading in history, evolution, sociology and its systems had provided me with dormant isomorphic structures yielding this “aha! experience.” Insiders may view it as old hat. The bibliography does not reveal a compendium I could draw on for an extended study of the theory. Until then, this book will do for me.

Japan went through three stages – adoption, absorption, and adaptation (the final stage being the point where it began critically to manipulate the international system to its own advantage). Brazenly establishing an analogy, I’d tentatively situate the author’s “logic of conformity” to the conceptual model as somewhere between adoption and absorption. I can sense at times the somewhat pedestrian gait on a successful PhD dissertation turned into a book. I’ve discovered small glitches and imprecisions here and there, which I interpret as “neophyte’s error” (or my insufficient grasp).

Henceforth, I’ll keep this book close at hand. There is more gold in it, I suspect, than I can grasp at the moment. I’ll keep on digging.

Listening to Stone: The Art and Life of Isamu Noguchi, by Hayden Herrera

Throughout the twentieth century, Isamu Noguchi was a vital figure in modern art. From interlocking wooden sculptures to massive steel monuments to the elegant Akari lamps, Noguchi became a master of what he called the "sculpturing of space." But his constant struggle-as both an artist and a man-was to embrace his conflicted identity as the son of a single American woman and a famous yet reclusive Japanese father. "It's only in art," he insisted, "that it was ever possible for me to find any identity at all."

In this remarkable biography of the elusive artist, Hayden Herrera observes this driving force of Noguchi's creativity as intimately tied to his deep appreciation of nature. As a boy in Japan, Noguchi would collect wild azaleas and blue mountain flowers for a little garden in front of his home. As Herrera writes, he also included a rock, "to give a feeling of weight and permanence." It was a sensual appreciation he never abandoned. When looking for stones in remote Japanese quarries for his zen-like Paris garden forty years later, he would spend hours actually listening to the stones, scrambling from one to another until he found one that "spoke to him." Constantly striving to "take the essence of nature and distill it," Noguchi moved from sculpture to furniture, and from playgrounds to sets for his friend the choreographer Martha Graham, and back again working in wood, iron, clay, steel, aluminum, and, of course, stone.

Noguchi traveled constantly, from New York to Paris to India to Japan, forever uprooting himself to reinvigorate what he called the "keen edge of originality." Wherever he went, his needy disposition and boyish charm drew women to him, yet he tended to push them away when things began to feel too settled. Only through his art-now seen as a powerful aesthetic link between the East and the West-did Noguchi ever seem to feel that he belonged.

Combining Noguchi's personal correspondence and interviews with those closest to him-from artists, patrons, assistants, and lovers-Herrera has created an authoritative biography of one of the twentieth century's most important sculptors. She locates Noguchi in his friendships with such artists as Buckminster Fuller and Arshile Gorky, and in his affairs with women including Frida Kahlo and Anna Matta Clark. With the attention to detail and scholarship that made her biography of Gorky a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Herrera has written a rich meditation on art in a globalized milieu. Listening to Stone is a moving portrait of an artist compulsively driven to reinvent himself as he searched for his own "essence of sculpture."

Review

“The genius of Listening to Stone is how its author, Hayden Herrera, inhabits the sculpturing hand of its subject. Rather than focus on the surface, Herrera gest 'beneath the skin,' as Noguchi would say, to the 'brilliance of matter' . . . [An] elegant account.” ―James Panero, The New York Times Book Review

“Masterful . . . Herrera had to synthesize a vast amount of material to produce this authoritative account.” ―Ann Levin, The Associated Press

“Hayden Herrera's welcome and comprehensive biography of [Noguchi] provides a definitive portrait of a figure who, by the time he died in 1988, was seen by many critics as the greatest American sculptor of the 20th century . . . Listening to Stone is a complex account of a flawed and restless visionary.” ―Michael Upchurch, The Seattle Times

“Herrera wisely used the biographical framework for Listening to Stone: The Art and Life of Isamu Noguchi . . . And what a tale it is! One that Ms. Herrera tells with clarity and Measured restraint. Noguchi knew all sorts of people--important artists and architects, patrons and politicians--and met them in a world-wide variety of places. At times Listening to Stone unfolds almost like a novel.” ―E. A. Carmean Jr., The Wall Street Journal

“A passionate stone carver and a constant traveler with a notoriously complicated love life, Noguchi constructed, with tremendous vision, skill, and turmoil, dynamic outdoor installations all around the world. But as Herrera . . . so sensitively illuminates and assiduously documents, his mixed heritage and illegitimate birth caused him endless anguish . . . Herrera tells Noguchi's astounding, many-chaptered story of 'unstoppable creative energy,' fame, and perpetual alienation with thrilling narrative drive and deep perception and reinvigorates appreciation for Noguchi's searching and evocative art.” ―Booklist, (starred review), Donna Seaman

“Herrera delves into the details of the life of influential and enigmatic American sculptor Isamu Noguchi in this thorough and solid biography . . . Herrera's expertise and insight illuminate Noguchi's evolving creative process, as well as the full scope of his personal relationships . . . Herrera adroitly shows that Noguchi was more than just a sculptor-he was a skilled craftsman, a heartbreaker, and a philosopher of design. This biography carves a smooth portrait of one of the most prolific and original artists of the twentieth century.” ―Publishers Weekly (Top Ten Art, Architecture & Photography Pick for Spring 2015)

“A comprehensive biography of a sculptor of stone and space . . . Herrera gives readers an ample, thorough analysis of his estimable art.” ―Kirkus Reviews

“From beginning to end, Listening to Stone is a beautifully written biography and an engrossing tale of one of the most inventive artists of the twentieth century. As she elucidates Noguchi's poetic genius and his wonderfully unclassifiable approach to art, Hayden Herrera brings to life the milieus in which Noguchi lived like no one else. From the mountainous coast of rural Japan to bohemian New York in the 1920s to Paris and Tokyo in the following decade, she vividly presents Noguchi's relationship with his settings. This is an enticing book achieved with an élan consistent with the magical work of a remarkable artist.” ―Nicholas Fox Weber, author of The Bauhaus Group: Six Masters of Modernism

“Listening to Stone provides a sweeping portrait of a rebel genius who was able to make a difference doing the work he most loved. Hayden Herrera helps us understand a man who, like many of his friends and associates, was branded an outlaw because he was so far ahead of his time. Listening to Stone is a monument to the man who created monuments around the world.” ―L. Steven Sieden, author of Buckminster Fuller’s Universe: His Life and Work

About the Author
Hayden Herrera is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Arshile Gorky: His Life and Work, as well as Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo, and Matisse: A Portrait.

"I Am Always Nowhere"
By John Thorndike
I’ve seen some of Noguchi’s work, and Hayden Herrera’s discussions of it are enlightening. Still, my fascination is with Noguchi the man. He was clearly not the easiest person to get along with, but his tremendous drive, his insecurities, his amorous quests and intense focus all make for a great story.

Imagine a boy of mixed parentage, born in the U.S., raised partly in Japan, who sets off alone at the age of thirteen on a ship bound from Yokohama to Seattle. From there, still alone, he makes his way across the U.S. by train to a boarding school in Indiana. Early on, from a story like this, we see much of Noguchi’s character: he was a traveler, he was unafraid, and he was forever torn between two cultures. Because of his mixed blood, he said, “I am always nowhere.” “When I’m in Japan, I think I should be I the United States, and when I’m there I want to be back in Japan.”

This same geographic impulse—“I simply can not stay in one place for a long time”—also seems to have played out with his romantic liaisons. Reading about his long list of lovers, I thought of the old line, “She who flies from me, I follow, and she who follows me, I fly from.” Or, as Noguchi himself put it: “I’m nice to women who are bad for me and bad to women who are good for me.”

He could be cantankerous, ungrateful and self-centered—as well as wonderfully buoyant and supportive. It all makes for a great read, in this biography of one of our country’s most notable sculptors.

A strong biography, albeit imperfect
By Slope Biker
Preparing to lead tours of Noguchi's works at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden this fall, I found this biography an extremely helpful resource. It is clean and clear, if a bit prosaic. Herrera leans heavily on Noguchi's own autobiography and seems to draw little from other sources, save a few still living individuals close to the artist, including Noguchi's last lover. The book is best when it maps narrative to image, and the inclusion of some wonderful hard-to-find photos is one of the book's strongest attributes. The book also is especially adept at detailing virtually every lover of import the artist had, including Frida Kahlo (about whom Herrera has also authored a biography), which makes for some saucy reading. The major struggle I faced was the implication that there was a seemingly precise turning point when Noguchi turned from starving and struggling artist to overnight success. This is not, in fact, an accurate portrayal of Noguchi's arc. I don't fault Herrera for failing to capture the trajectory or finding the inflection point, for, in fact, I don't believe there was one. But I'm not sure why she seems to have decided she needed this in the telling of the tale. Another peculiar aspect to the story, related to my primary misgiving, is that Herrera seems to paint Noguchi as a critical failure, even into the 1960s, when he was anything but. On the one hand, he was receiving, she points out, retrospectives and major commissions around the globe. Yet, she routinely depicts reviews of the artist's work that carried harsh judgments or worse. I suspect Herrera selects this approach to continually cast her subject as an underdog, but it creates the peculiar impression that Noguchi was not an accepted artist when he clearly was. These are, in the end, relatively small problems in a well-constructed, competently researched narrative. But they leave the reader wondering why Herrera didn't thread the needle just a tad more carefully -- in the service of what would have made this important book even more believable.

The Tenth Man—Gold Bar Trials (1981) The true story of the murder of a gold merchant and his two employees reads like a fast-paced thriller. From the sinister excitement of the plotting and the merciless, savage execution of the victims, to the hiding and waiting for eventual retribution, this will prove one gripping read. The Murder of a Beauty Queen (1984)This is the story of a man found guilty on circumstantial evidence, of the murder of his beautiful, sensuous, rich and widowed sister-in-law. Not until the condemned man appealed did a witness admit he had committed perjury—given false evidence. Confessing, this was the first time in Malaysia’s legal history that a witness in a murder trial had been convicted and sentenced to long-term imprisonment for perjury. The accused was finally acquitted. Had he been hung and the perjurer exposed later, this perjurer would most likely have been hung in accordance to the law that demands a life for a life in these circumstances. With carnal and carnage in flux, this is a trial not to be missed.

Good Introduction to two infamous murders
By Mr. Leong Wai Hong
This book is a good introduction to two famous criminal cases. The second story on the murder trial of Jean Sinnappa in particular gripped the Malaysian public in the early 1980s. This is the only book written on the murder. I wish there were more details though.

Advice from a Yogi: An Explanation of a Tibetan Classic on What Is Most Important, by Padampa Sangye, Khenchen Thrangu

This new translation of Padampa Sangye's One Hundred Verses, beautifully rendered into English, provides timely guidance for people trying to practice the Buddhist path in the workaday world.

The urgency of spiritual practice has seldom been as simply and powerfully conveyed as it is in Padampa Sangye’s One Hundred Verses. This Tibetan Buddhist classic is an antidote to the tendency we all have to waste our precious human lives. Khenchen Thrangu’s lively commentary on the text brings to light its subtleties and amplifies its applicability to our daily struggles, showing how an understanding of its teaching on impermanence is the key to working with common difficulties such as loneliness, craving, betrayal, competitive colleagues, or squabbling families. It speaks to us today as profoundly as it did to the people of Dingri, Tibet, to whom it was first addressed a millennium ago.

Review
“This great text of one hundred profound instructions by the most revered mahasiddha of the noble land of India, Padampa Sangye, contains all one needs to know if one aspires to follow the Vajrayana path. And now this timeless volume is made all the more relevant and accessible through an especially illuminating commentary by the Venerable Kyabje Thrangu Rinpoche, who in my mind is one of the most learned and realized beings here with us on earth.”—Dzigar Kongtrül, author of It’s Up to You
