About the Author
William F. Powell studied at the Art Student's Career School in New York; Harrow Technical College in Harrow, England; and the Louvre Free School of Art in Paris, France. His work has been represented in major galleries and reproduced in the form of illustrations, prints, and limited-edition collector's plates. He has been professionally involved in fine art, commercial art, and illustration for more than 45 years. His experience as an instructor includes oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, colored pencil, and pastel with subjects ranging from landscapes and seascapes to still life, portraiture, and wildlife. He holds awards for the technical side of his art, which has been used in major space and environmental programs.

Sadly, not a panacea

I was pretty excited to order this book, but now that I have it, I am not completely sure how useful it is...there are a zillion swatches with recipes, but there is so much variation in paint brands and so forth that once you have used your paints for a bit, you are better off just finding the colors yourself. Also, there is a certain subset of paint colors used, so if you have a cadmium red medium instead of a light, you are back to figuring it out yourself. I think also there's a bit too much black used to darken/dull colors. The introductory text on mixing is useful, but too short. The printing is nice and vivid.

Good book. Every artist needs for that one special color they can't make.

If you paint, you need this book. And if you teach, which I do, my students borrow it all the time in class. I won't let it go home with them though. I suggest they go on Amazon and buy their own. The hardest part is that often we don't have every color they recommend. And the colors are often called by different names by brands, but it is so helpful. One use for that special color will pay for the book. Paint is expensive and takes up space. Keeping 12-15 on hand is easier than 20-30 or 1500.

Great buy for a great book.

I had bought the single landscape book and was glad the publisher decided to combine all the books. What a savings! Since I do oils, now I can use this book for water color and acrylics if I choose. It's a great reference for portrait painting (detailing facial highlighting and skin tones) as well as still life, land and seascapes. This book has very detailed recipes for color mixtures and 2 re-usable grid pages to measure the paint need for each recipe. There's no guess work, it's been done for you. It has cut my mixing and guessing to 1/2 the time and I don't waste paint. I ordered two, one for myself and one for my instructor.

About the Author
Gerald Markowitz is Distinguished Professor of History at John Jay College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He is, along with David Rosner, coauthor of Deceit and Denial: The Deadly Politics of Industrial Pollution (UC Press), and eight other books.
David Rosner is Ronald Lauterstein Professor of Public Health and Professor of History at Columbia University and Co-director of the Center for the History and Ethics of Public Health at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health. In 2010 he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Lead Wars" should be required reading in all medical schools

Lead paint and "tetraethyl lead" poisoning of children resulting in brain damage and death represents one of the most hideous public health disasters in America.

The Ethyl Gasoline Corporation manufactured "tetraethyl lead" because when mixed with gas, it improved vehicle performance and fuel economy. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner wrote that "lead became part of the air Americans breathed when, in 1923, lead was introduced into gasoline to give cars more power. With the dramatic growth of this vast industry, every American child, parent, and neighbor began to systematically incorporate into their bodies a toxic heavy metal that was already known to be poisoning workers in the United States and elsewhere."

For decades, Medical Director of the Ethyl Corp., Robert A. Kehoe, M.D., gave "scientific cover" for Ethyl, and became the principal defender of keeping "highly profitable" lead in gasoline, which contributed to the poisoning of millions of American children from 1928 until TEL or tetraethyl lead was outlawed in 1986. Industry-owned research facilities conducted lead studies, usually with pro-lead results; research was carefully crafted to benefit industrial sponsors, not the health of U.S. citizens. Incredibly, under oath in 1966, Dr. Kehoe told Congress that he and his colleagues at the Kettering Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio "had been looking for 30 years for evidence of bad effects from leaded gasoline in the general population and had found none." Kehoe argued that lead is "normal" in the human body and even recommended, for the sake of progress, elevating the lead level in gasoline. There was, he said, "not the slightest evidence" of harm from airborne lead, and claimed that leaded gasoline posed no risk at all to public health.

Needless to say, Kehoe was tragically wrong. Herbert Needleman, M.D., a courageous pediatrician at Temple University discovered a direct correlation between lowered IQ and increased lead content of baby teeth collected from children in North Philadelphia. He got the idea from the 1950s, when strontium 90, a by-product of atomic testing in Utah, became a component in the teeth and skeletons of babyboomers across the USA. Needleman's research in the 1960s indicated that "leaded" gas exhaust poisoned babies both inside and outside the womb. A recent study found that children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder have elevated average blood-lead levels 20-30% higher than children without ADHD. The central nervous system of a fetus or young child, undergoing rapid changes, is particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. For his pioneering research, Dr. Needleman, now in his late 80s, should have received the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Many European countries banned the use of lead-based paint as early as 1909. The U.S. lead industry "chose to run massive marketing and promotion campaigns all through the first half of the twentieth century despite their knowledge that lead paint was causing children to go into comas, suffer convulsions, and die." The USA allowed the continued use of lead in paint until 1978, but lead does not biodegrade. Today, 2% of American children are diagnosed with lead poisoning.

The demise of Kehoe's leaded gas was accelerated when Clair Patterson, a geochemist at Caltech analyzed core drillings of ice in Antarctica indicating that concentrations of lead in the environment had increased an alarming 350 percent between 1930 and 1965. When leaded gasoline was marketed nationwide in the late 1920s and in the 1930s, the frequency of childhood lead poisoning reported in medical journals increased dramatically. Unfortunately, scientists in the United States have lost funding and have been exposed to lawsuits (or much worse) after their evidence-based research produced results that threatened powerful economic interests. When Drs. Alice Hamilton, Harriet Hardy, Randolph Byers, Clair Patterson, and Herbert Needleman presented unwelcome lead data, petrochemical interests devoted considerable resources attacking them personally. Suppression of unwelcome lead research and fiendish harassment of independent scientists was not uncommon, particularly during the pre-EPA era.

While children continue to be exposed to lead, those born in the 1990s have higher IQs than those born 20 years earlier, when lead was lavishly dumped along U.S. roads and highways. Based on the government's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, about 68 million American children experienced toxic exposure from leaded gasoline during the Ethyl era. Between 1976 and 1996, removal of lead from gasoline precipitated nearly a 90% drop in children's blood-lead levels according to the CDC.

Markowitz and Rosner remind us that society is measured by the treatment of its children. "For more than a hundred years, we have knowingly poisoned our children and destroyed the future of millions of our citizens." Lead in paint and gas has been foisted on us by "rapacious industries that have knowingly profited from our human suffering." The challenge for young pediatricians is that lead poisoning is a preventable disease.

Excellent book

I am a Professor in Environmental Management and found the material in this book to be very informative and thought provoking. My intent is to use the background and facts presented here in a case study on the politics of toxic substances in my class on the Interactions of Hazardous Materials. My industrial background included first hand experience with the Formaldehyde question back when the EPA and OSHA were considering significant regulatory changes after the initial valid rat study. I was employed by the industrial sector at the time and we were very intent on showing the true science behind the question, yet we still had the best interests of industry on the table at all times. I can readily see how the authors have honestly treated this dangerous exposure to the adverse health effects of very small amounts of lead in our environment. The actions on the part of the industrial sector here are deplorable and go beyond the effort to put the true science of the issue before the public and the health agency regulators.

A "must read" for parents of young children and those in the public health field.

This is a well-written, easy to read, accurate account of how lead became so pervasive in the environment in general and in housing in particular. The book documents the struggles the City of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University made to eliminate lead poisoning as a threat to the public health.

The book also outlines how the same political and economic pressures apply to other substances, such as bisphenol A.

The book contains extensive references to support the statements.

A Mixed Bag

This book covers both photography and digital design. This may be a drawback for those who use one or the other. I use Photoshop for website design images, print material design and photography, so all the techniques interest me.

Don’t count on “Advanced Adobe Photoshop CC for Design Professionals” being only for advanced users. The first chapter is entitled “Introduction to Advanced Navigational Features,” but workspaces, rulers, guides and grids aren’t really advanced. The next chapter is on Adobe Bridge, which is a critical work process system for photographers and really not advanced. Chapter 10 on “Creating images for the Web” is on common procedures like formatting images; however, it also includes slicing images, a more advanced technique.

The 3D techniques might be new to the average Photoshop user. Also, creating compositions and applying special effects might be enlightening and inspiring.

I’m largely self-taught with Photoshop. When starting the lessons, I realized that there are, indeed, many useful tips that professionals use that I didn’t know. Although the shortcuts that are frequently referenced are not entirely relevant to me. Unless I use Photoshop every day, I just rely on right click rather than shortcut keys, because there are too many to memorize.

The book comes with a CD containing the lessons. Since the introduction advises the reader to register the book for the most current lessons and video tutorials, I did that instead of using the CD.

The video tutorials are helpful. However, I found that Jennifer Smith works a bit fast and uses too many shortcut keys. It would be more helpful if she slowed down and used the conventional method of selecting tools.

I haven’t had time to work though all the lessons, but I intend to. Doing so will review some techniques and fill in gaps in my knowledge. All in all, the book and lessons are helpful and will advance my ability to use Photoshop. You might benefit, as well, by purchasing “Advanced Adobe Photoshop CC for Design Professionals.”

Advanced Photoshop For Design Professionals: A Critical Review.

I've always liked Jennifer Smith's publications on Adobe's products. She and her husband publish on this subject quite frequently.

In general, if you have some their earlier works with the exception of the "For Dummies" series, this book's tutorials or I should say subjects covered, have been seen many times before. This makes it not necessary for "advanced" Photoshop users but for "experienced" or moderately-skilled Photoshop.

There are essentially two kinds of Photoshop users, the photography buffs and the illustrator/ fine artists. This book leans more toward photographers.

The books contents are as follows:

Lesson 2: Taking Advantage of Adobe Bridge
Lesson 3: Advanced Selection Techniques
Lesson 4: The Pen Tool: Beyond The Primer
Lesson 5: Correcting Like A Pro

Lesson 9: Advanced Use of the Vector Tools

A bit different than most Photoshop instructionals, but still very worthwhile

This is a substantially different instructional than the author's earlier "Photoshop CC Digital Classroom".

In this volume, the author covers subjects of interest not only photographers, but graphic designers as well which both broadens the scope and, if you are a dedicated photographer, might reduce this book's appeal.

Don't let that happen to you: with Photoshop, without doubt one of the most powerful, complex and difficult to master programs, no knowledge is without value.

The contents feel a bit odd. The first chapter is a collection of "advanced navigational features" intended to help you "use the workspace to work as efficiently as possible". If you've been using Photoshop for any length of time, some of these tips will not be new to you.

The next chapter is on Adobe Bridge which I have always avoided using in favor of other image management programs. This chapter went into more detail than other materials I have read and I may actually give Bridge another try. Bridge has one tool I was totally unaware of, the Image Processor. Another technique I didn't know about was using Bridge to load files as Photoshop images. Cool stuff - and worth the price of the book right there.

Now come two chapters on selections, one of them exclusively on the pen tool which is probably both the most feared and the most useful tool in Photoshop. Good material in both chapters, particularly the one on the pen tool, which also gets into the weeds about its use as a graphic illustration tool.

Color correction, painting and retouching, creating compositions, creating special effects, using vector tools, creating images for the web and applications design, using automation tools (an excellent chapter) and using Photoshop for 3D objects comprise the balance of the chapters.

As noted this is a different kind of Photoshop book. The information is solid, although some is not necessarily of immediate use to photographers. But, frankly, that does not detract from its value: anything that teaches you more about Photoshop is, in my opinion, worthwhile - and this book has a lot of good info on Photoshop.

Love conquers all!

I absolutely love this book, I absolutely love this book. I have never cried so much. This is a wonderful love story. I know all that happened, but love over came it all. Beautifully written. My student Bozena recommended this book to me, and I will have my GED students at Wright College read it. I will also have them complete a review for extra credit or some kind of incentive for being active in reading of this book. Great to know that we both have something in common. Wright College.

Fifteen year old Selma is a normal teenager until her world is torn upside down when the Bosnian war begins. After her father is arrested her Mum sends Selma away to stay with her aunt in the hope she will be safe but the city is attacked and Selma watches helplessly as her family are murdered before her eyes. Dragged away to a concentration camp Selma suffers physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her captors and starts to believe death would be the easier option.

Sanela Ramic Jurich paints us a vivid picture of the horrors that took place during the Bosnian war allowing the reader to put themselves in the place of the characters, feeling their pain and terror. The book felt more like a biography than a novel so the depiction of the soldiers raping Selma and the other young girls was just one of many very disturbing scenes to read. A lot of the book has a darkness to it that I found very depressing, this is not the type of escapism I enjoy but it does help to occasionally read this type of book to remind ourselves how lucky we are to live in a peaceful time and place.

Selma realised that even in her darkest hour there was room for hope and eventually after she moved to America with her mother and son her dreams were realised. This turns out to be a sweet love story with a happy ending which helps to put to the back of our minds the horrible stuff that came at the start. I found this to be a very touching and heartfelt story. Kudos to the author for having the strength to draw on her own experiences to write this fictional book and remind us that every war has its share of innocent victims. Many of us choose to ignore or forget this fact in our need for `power' or what we believe is `right'.

Heartfelt Story

The astounding story is that of Selma who witnesses and lives through gruesome experiences. The author does not ease you into traumatic scenes but rather thrusts you into raw events. You are left with a feeling of being kicked in the gut. Selma survives atrocities completely unaware of her physical and emotional resilience, heroism, and bravery. When the will to live is lost and life becomes unbearable, Selma's spirit perseveres in the face of impossible odds. She marches through life as if led by Winston Churchill's quote "If you are going through hell, keep going".

Another subject of the story to consider is the mayhem of the mind in both the malefactor's and the victim's. Did the criminal have immoral tendencies dormant and the war provided a perfect backdrop for unleashing those activities?
In the case of victims, why do some live through horrendous acts of violence yet others lose their mind or take their own life? I can only conclude that both the first-time criminals and the victims who could no longer endure pain have emotionally built up and reached their "tipping point".

About the Author
Dr. Werner W.K. Hoeger Professor Emeritus in the Department of Kinesiology at Boise State University, and fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. The 2004 recipient of the Presidential Award for Research and Scholarship in the College of Education at Boise State University, Dr. Hoeger continues to research and lecture on exercise physiology, physical fitness, and wellness. In addition to PRINCIPLES AND LABS FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS, Dr. Hoeger has published several Cengage Learning texts, including Fitness and Wellness, Principles and Labs for Fitness and Wellness, Lifetime Physical Fitness and Wellness, Wellness: Guidelines for a Healthy Lifestyle, and Water Aerobics for Fitness and Wellness (with Terry-Ann Spitzer Gibson). Dr. Hoeger is a former luge runner and Winter Olympian, and renowned fitness and wellness innovator. It's a really good book

It's a really good book and it gives you a broad information about wellness and fitness, and helps you understand what you need to do to keep yourself in a good weight and fitness condition.

In my case I have always been trying to be involve in sports, like skiing, running, cycling.

So I enjoy reading the book and learning a little more about this subject.

A little outdated in my opinion on some things. It has an activity in one of the chapters that is supposed to be in line with the new MyPlate, but it lines up with the old pyramid in quanitites of food groups.
