Not a Bad Story

but the author sure should have used an editor to catch all the inconsistencies in the writing. Grammer and spelling errors were a common problem but more disturbing was the way the author kept forgetting who she was talking about. Names changed in the middle of sentences and phrases were repeated. Next time please get a professional editor. The problems were very distracting. I spent more time looking for corrections than I did reading the story. Do not waste your time with this one.

Hmmmm ok.....

Well I finished it and although the story line could have been ok the writing was a bit erratic and basic to say the least. it was a tad bit embarrassing to hear the main character who wasn't that old turn phrases that may have been coined by a very elderly man... lots of typos and grammar errors, but it did pass the time..and I did finish it..enough said.

A great story But needs proofreading

The storyline is very believable and the author made sure there was plenty of visualization. My biggest complaint was the grammatical errors and poor punctuation. I had to reread some parts, figure out what a "torch" was, and sometimes there was too much of a good thing. By that I mean she gave too much of a description that did not need to be so lengthy, ie board rooms & the furnishings. I really enjoyed this book and hope others can still enjoy it as long as the proofreading errors can be overlooked.

Solid early novel of a virtual world

Daniel F. Galouye's _Simulacron-3_ gained some notoriety a few years ago when a movie was made based on it -- THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR. The sadly somewhat overlooked movie is quite good, and a fairly faithful adaptation of the book. I found it reminiscent of DARK CITY and (natch!) THE MATRIX.

The book opens with Doug Hall attending a party given by his boss, Walter Siskin. Hall has just been promoted to replace his dead friend and mentor at Reactions, Inc., which is developing a new simulation to evaluate consumer reactions. The simulation is populated by virtual people who are exposed to advertisements and such, their reactions analyzed. Siskin sinisterly wishes to use this simulation for political purposes -- he believes that he will be able to control the country if he can predict voter response to various approaches. Siskin is opposed by the Reaction Monitors group -- a seemingly ubiquitous group of pollsters, who will be put out of business by the new sim. Hall is made uneasy by Siskin's political ambitions, himself.

Then Hall starts to notice some strange things. His mentor's notes contained what appeared to be a cryptic message to him, which disappeared. He remembers some other colleagues that nobody else can recall in any way. A psychiatrist friend thinks he's mad. His mentor's beautiful daughter seems to run hot and cold with him -- and to be very concerned about his crazy ideas. And what about the time they drove out of the city and all of a sudden the road just stopped with nothing beyond?

It's no big surprise what's going on even without the references I've given to DARK CITY and THE MATRIX. Hall and all the people he knows are themselves virtual creations in a simulated world. Much of the resistance to his simulation efforts is orchestrated from the "real world" (or is it?), which doesn't want to lose its Reaction Monitors, the real reason for the simulation. Hall finds himself traveling "down" to his simulated world, and encountering (sometimes sadistic) evidence of someone from the "real" world taking over his brain. It's mostly pretty well handled, and the questions raised are interesting. The resolution is perhaps just a bit too convenient, too much fulfilling of wishes. The characters are mostly fairly stock. Still, a fine story.

A well-written tale from a period before there were home computers,... or even the concept of them. All computers then were research or military devices.

The tale is wound up, then released to wind its way through an unbelievably bizarre world, dragging the reader with it. The mind-bending 'twist' at the end may leave the reader briefly disoriented.

It is one of the really good computer-world stories from a time when this device was still a mystical mechanism.

Simulacron-3 is up there with the movie, "Colossus: The Forbin Project."

Daniel Galouye is a very under-rated SF author from the 1960s. Simulcron-3 is his best book , of a multi-tiered world in which Reality is not only in flux but also inconsistent. What is "real", is a question that many philosophers and many religions ponder, although few have any truly convincing answers. This book explores that question in a powerful and creepy way, with the main character never sure what is happening, or even if anything is happening. Is our world only a simulation inside a giant computer? A simulation within a simulation? Is anything "real"?
Buddhism maintains that nothing is real, that flux is all there is, that constant change is what we think of as reality, and that even the sense of self we all experience is an illusion. Is Douglas Hall real? Is he an illusion?

A Good Read, But Nothing Special

As is usually the case with publications by Ms. Kasari, these stories are well-written and contain few grammatical or typographical errors. Unfortunately for me, the storyline stretched creditability too far. The sexual descriptions were hot and steamy, but I was also disappointed by the superficial development of the main characters. For those reasons, I have only give this work three stars.

Great Book

Out of any guitar teaching books I own, this one is my favorite. It is a larger type book with big plastic loop bindings. This makes open placement much easier. The music scales or graphics are very easy to read and the book is presented in a logical manner. This book also comes with 3 CD's which are named Book 1, Book 2 and Book 3. Very easy to use and follow. 5 stars.

After doing some reaserch on good guitar books I found this one and bought it. I've been playing the guitar on and off for about 6 years but never really took the time to learn the craft and the instrument I just looked for the tab of my favorite songs and played that. But now after years of frustration and not really knowing how to play I've decided to buy a couple of books (this one, music theory for guitarist and fretboard mastery) and start really learning how to play the guitar. Even tho as a beginner I took some lessons with 3 different teachers, this book has taught me more than all of them combined. This book is awsome for any guitarist looking to learn the fundamentals and basics. I belive it's very important to have a good base of knowledge as a musician to be able to acomplish anything you want in music. This book gives you that and more!

It may not be for everyone but it is for me

After spending a good amount of money on one-on-one guitar lesson with professional guitarists, I've gotten nowhere. It's none of any of my former teachers' fault. It's just being 47 years old with a full-time job and and another full-time job raising a family with 3 young kids leave me with little time and energy for little else for myself, and that made it more challenging to learn how to play a musical instrument. I recently got this book and its CD's, after helping my oldest daughter with her viola practices using a CD to accompany her playing along with a book. All I can say is that it was at $15 well-spent. One thing I must say though - if you don't want to practice, then no matter how much you spend, it ain't gonna help you learn or play better. The accompaniments on the CD's will make you sound better than you can really play, and that will motivate you to practice even more. Honestly, it does make me want to "grab my guitar and play it all night long."

About the Author

Anver Friedman is a Distinguished University Professor. He received his PH.D. degree in 1956 from the Hebrew University. His research interests include partial differential equations, both general mathematical theory as well as applications to models that arise in the physical and life sciences, in engineering, and in industry.

Chiu-Yen Kao is an Associate Professor at Claremont McKenna College. Her area of expertise is in applied mathematics.
