This early work on mineralogy and petrography is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It contains details on polarizing microscopes, mineral determination, igneous rock types, geological mapping and much more. This is a fascinating work and is thoroughly recommended for anyone interested in geology. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The best
By Cliente de Amazon
I've bought Goulding's "Classical music, the 50 greatest composers and their 1,000 greatest works" and Libbey's "The NPR guide to building a classical CD collection". I must say they're two great books, but if I had to choose THE classical book for starters I would highly recommend the Greenberg's "How to listen to great music".

It takes you by the hand accross the different eras, analyzing every period, explaining every detail, and decomposing every piece even using musical notation.

It's just a pleasure to read this book, it even turns you into a happy mood.

Obviously, you need to listen to the music he's explaining, and you may either look it up on youtube, or buy/download a CD.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Treat yourself to this book!
By Carol
Treat yourself to this book! I've listened to some of Professor Greenberg's audio courses from The Teaching Company and found them to be absolutely wonderful. I worried about whether his material could be presented as well in written format. It can! The book is packed with fascinating information, is beautifully organized and presented with humor. It's extremely "accessible" and a great read. I'll be referencing it often.

Excellent introduction for the novice
By Kersi Von Zerububbel
Before presenting my review I should warn the reader that I have no training in music. I do not read music nor do I play any instrument. I do however love to listen to music of all genres.

I was looking for a good, not too shallow and not too academic, introduction to western classical music. I wanted to learn to appreciate what I was listening to beyond just the tune and rhythym. Greenberg's course fit the bill quite nicely. Starting with early music Greenberg takes one on a very rewarding journey all the way to the modern composers. The third edition consists of 48 lectures at 45 minutes each for a total of 36 hours. Now some may consider this a tad long but for my purposes it was just great. In fact it took me a good 8 months to finish the course!

Professer Greenberg presents the material with zest and enthusiasm that makes the material easily understandable. An important concept in this course is the idea of 'music as a mirror'. In other words knowing the history, culture, and social norms of the time is ABSOLUTELY essential to understanding and appreciating the works.

The early lectures deal with music basics such as tone, form etc. which was great because for a non-musician like myself it lays the groundwork for later lectures. Some samples of ancient Greek music were quite beautiful.

I found that listening to about two lectures a week was just right to mull the contents over and maybe check out a point or two in any music dictionary. In some cases listening to a piece to corroborate a salient in the lectures helped a great deal.

I am so glad I purchased this set. I thought long and hard before coughing up the bread because the set was not cheap. But I am glad I did. The course gave me a new appreciation of the magnificient gift of classical music. It is too bad that 'The Teaching Company', producers of this set, do not have an arrangement with Amazon to market this to a wider audience.

A great introduction and sure to become a treasure in your home.

Disjointed and frustrating!
By John P.
The logical flow of the book is disjointed. I've had to spend too much unnecessary time troubleshooting and researching solutions that the author could have very easily addressed. Two examples:

1. In order to view the image depicted in Figure 1.6 on page 7, the user has to click the Build Settings tab + ensure the All option is toggled + ensure the Combined option is toggled. However, the author only make reference to the Build Settings tab, so the ability to follow steps outlined in the book is impossible, because (in fact) the user doesn't see the screen the author indicates the user should see.

2. The book makes reference to a Documents directory and further elaborates that the database file *must* be stored in the Documents directory, otherwise data cannot be written to the Database. However, the book never explains the location of the Documents directory. For being such a critical feature (Of course my database needs to be writable!), some time and attention should have been paid to better explaining the Documents directory.

All in all, my experience with this book has been frustrating. I only recommend buying this book as a case study in ineffectual writing.

Review
"Vincent Sacco has written and intriguing little book on the complex phenomenon called "crime waves." Relying primarily on case studies and historical accounts, he paints a fascinating picture of crime waves as they are constructed and perceived by society. The ultimate value of Sacco's book may be that it helps one to appreciate the futility of simple, quick-fix solutions to complex, of even worse, illusory problems. This is a very readable and engaging work aimed at undergraduate students in the social sciences." (J. Stephen Wormith 2006-08-07)

About the Author

Vince Sacco is a professor in the department of sociology at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. His research interests are in criminology and urban sociology. His interests relate to the study of criminology, as well as the study of public perceptions of and reactions to crime. In approaching criminology, his work emphasizes the study of "criminal events" and investigates why some people rather than others are more likely to be victimized by crime; when and where crimes occur; and why the police, lawmakers and members of the general public think about crime as they do. He has published several books including The Criminal Event 2/e Wadsworth, 2002, Advances in Criminological Theory (The Process & Structure of Crime: Criminal Events & Crime Analysis) Transaction Press, 2001, (with R.F. Meier and L.W. Kennedy), Crime Victims in Context, Roxbury Publishing, 1998, (with L.W. Kennedy).

Chapter 1

Play Nintendo

I’m sweating in my blue overalls as I look at all the obstacles ahead of me. I have three options: (1) pound my head on this brick block and hope for a star, (2) run and jump over the enemy, or (3) step on this turtle’s head and force him to retract into his shell. No matter which option I go with, the fact remains that the Koopa Troopa up ahead is going to stay there. I can’t control it or convince it that it’s actually a Ninja Turtle and thus is in the wrong game. That’s fine. No Ninja Turtles means more pizza for me, and I’m Italian, so this is all working out. I know the Koopa Troopa isn’t going to listen to me, and therefore I need to control the only thing I can—and that’s me, Mario.

Videogames are a great analogy for life. You go through levels, get thrown off by obstacles, and face several enemies. The game will become harder and harder, but it’s okay because you become smarter, faster, and more skilled. When playing a videogame, you control a character by making it jump, run, duck, and attack. I mean, that was back in my day when my Super Nintendo controller had two buttons. Today videogame controllers have as many buttons as a keyboard, so who knows what you can do. You can probably press A + Y + Z while twirling your left joystick and your character will sing the national anthem. Either way, the fact remains that your character is the only thing you can control in the game. The enemies will keep coming, the walls will keep shrinking, and the time will keep ticking away. It’s your job to navigate your character through a situation you cannot control.

That’s exactly how you should view life. A Bawse understands that there are many things in life you have no control over and it is inefficient to become frustrated by that reality. Not being able to control people and situations doesn’t make you powerless; it just means you have to exercise your power in a different way. If you can’t control people, then control your reaction to them. If you can’t control a situation, then prepare for it.

Before I started my career in the entertainment industry, I was the leader of a small dance company (if you could even call it that) in Toronto. We started off small, with only a few dancers, specializing in only Indian dance styles, but over time, in true Lilly fashion, I wanted to keep growing and expanding our horizons. Since I was little, I’ve had larger-than-life ideas. I never wanted to settle for something simple or mediocre, and as a result, when I did things, I wanted them to be the biggest and best things. There were so many other dance teams and companies around and I didn’t want to just be another addition to an already long list. I committed my days to transforming the company in the hopes of creating a dance empire that would take over the world. I really thought that was possible. We would be dancing Power Rangers who saved the world, one extended leg and pointed toe at a time. I decided to convert my basement into a full-blown office. We held auditions for dancers who were skilled in all forms of dance so that we could perform hip-hop, classical, and fusion in addition to what we were already doing. I organized photo shoots and video shoots and other creative marketing techniques. I had so much drive and determination that no injury, financial strain, or competition could steer me off my path. What I couldn’t see, however, was the one obstacle that was in front of me the entire time, and which caused everything to fall apart: the team itself.

I had such big dreams for the company and I was always willing to work for them. Without hesitation, I would pull all-nighters to put together marketing materials, spend money out of my own pocket to invest in what we needed, and drive myself crazy thinking of innovative ways to set ourselves apart. But then I would arrive at practice and deal with three dancers showing up late, one not showing up at all, and two of them leaving early. Getting people to put in work on events to help our brand was like pulling teeth. We often performed at weddings and thus needed to adhere to a professional dress code, yet some dancers would occasionally show up wearing shorts and flip-flops. I would get so frustrated with them because I was putting in so much work for this dream, but the reality of the situation was that the dream was mine, not theirs. I tried for years to control them and make them work for something they didn’t care about as much as I did, and it just didn’t work.

My dance company dreams faded away gradually, but the process was hastened by my discovery of YouTube. I remember feeling a new sensation the first time I uploaded a video. I wrote the script, shot it, edited it, and released it. No one else was involved or required, and the independence was exhilarating. Soon I developed an even greater drive and passion for my career as Superwoman than I’d had previously with my dance team. This time, however, I wasn’t trying to control a group of twenty people every time I needed something to get done. The only person I needed to control was the only person I could control, and that was me.

Today, of course, I have a team that surrounds me and helps me to build my business. But Lilly is still at the root of Superwoman. The success of Superwoman and the failure of my dance team helped me learn a very important lesson: work with what’s in your control. This lesson can be applied to so many situations in our lives. You get frustrated when your parents nag you, so every time they do, you storm out of the room. You can’t control your parents, so stop trying. Instead, use that energy to control your reaction the next time they nag you. You might not be able to smash a brick block and find a star that makes you invincible, but you can practice patience and build up a resistance to nagging. If none of that works, you can find the closest green tube and transport yourself out of the conversation.

Have you ever played a videogame then lost because you realized you were looking at the wrong part of the screen the whole time? You were so confused as to why your controller wasn’t working, but really you were just trying to control the wrong character. That’s what trying to control people is like in real life. We’re so often fixated on getting people to behave in accordance with what we want that we forget to focus on ourselves.

The best way to stop people from pushing your buttons is to start pushing your own.

A + Y + Z. Left joystick.

“O Canada.”

Chapter 2

Conquer your thoughts

Touch your nose. No, I’m serious. I want you to stop reading after this sentence and don’t resume until you take your right hand and use it to touch the tip of your nose.

Do it.

Look at you! What an impressive piece of machinery you are. Do you know what you just did? You were introduced to a thought and decided to act on it; your brain sent signals through your neurotransmitters, through your body, and into your arm, prompting it to move and touch your magnificent nose.

Why did I just make you touch your nose? Because I’m Simon and I run this town! No, but really, it was to show you that YOU control your mind; your mind doesn’t control you. You successfully directed your brain to touch your nose. Understanding your mind’s power is key to being a Bawse. Imagine using that same type of direction to instruct your mind to stop being negative, or jealous, or terrified. We often feel that we are slaves to biology. People say things like “I just can’t help but feel that way” or “I can’t control being jealous.” But I believe that, in most situations, we can teach our minds to function with more positivity and efficiency. In other words, by understanding that mushy sponge in our skulls, we can conquer our thoughts.

What does conquering your thoughts mean? First, it means you get to wear an awesome warrior costume, so congrats on that victory! #OOTD Also, it means understanding why you feel the way you feel, what prompts you to carry out certain actions, what causes specific reactions, and what circumstances lead you to make regrettable decisions. Once you discover all the ins and outs of your mind, you basically have the cheat code to your game of life. All you have to do is input the data and you have access to extra mental weapons, stronger protection, and new passageways. Notice I said YOUR game of life and not THE game of life. That’s because everyone’s mind is different. The cheat codes you discover for your mind cannot be applied to all of humanity. I’m not encouraging you to study the BIOLOGY of the brain (it is fascinating, but also, who has that much time?). I’m encouraging you to study your specific psychological makeup.

I was forced to learn how to conquer my thoughts because of the nature of my job. For six years I’ve been posting videos twice a week on the Internet. I have over 500 videos on my main channel and 500 videos on my second channel—that’s over 1,000 videos for people around the globe to view and judge as harshly as they desire. The Internet is wonderful and revolutionary, but let’s face it, it can also be extremely cruel. People feel they can say anything to you when they are sitting comfortably behind their computer screen being completely anonymous. When I first started posting videos, I got a lot of support (mostly because my friends and family would watch and they felt obligated to be nice. Also, I had a second account that I would use to compliment myself. Oops!), but with time I started to receive negative, hateful comments and I didn’t know how to react. Here are a few examples (word for word, without spellcheck) of the comments I’ve received:

This lily Singh paki ***** needs to die she’s everywhere I hate seeing her Bengali paki face I hope she gets cancer or her mum dies slowly j painfully leave focus tube alone up horrible black *****

This is why women shouldn’t have rights.

This video gave me cancer

she is so ****ing stupid. she only get famous because she hot and thst sells but she is still dumb. I hope someone shoots her

FUN!

Do hateful comments still bother me? Sometimes, but not as often. How did I deal with them? When people ask me this, my response is usually, “I developed a thick skin.” But what I really mean is, I learned how to conquer my thoughts. This is how I broke it down:

People are leaving mean comments.

Why?

Maybe it’s because my videos suck.

Do you say mean things to people when you think they suck?

No. Not unless I’m having a bad day or in a bad mood.

Maybe people leaving the negative comments are having a bad day. Maybe that’s what the comment is really about.

But the comments make me feel insecure.

Do you like your videos?

Yes.

So should your opinion of your videos be dependent on what other people think? Is that the type of person you want to be?

Not at all.

So it doesn’t make sense to let the negative opinions of others impact what you think.

Maybe I should stop making videos, though.

Does making videos make you happy?

Yes, very.

Do you believe you should value negative comments above your own happiness?

That doesn’t sound right. Maybe I should just reply to them?

Or you could spend more time replying to people that make you feel good so they’re more encouraged to keep supporting you.

Now, you may think a convo like this sounds a bit naive. OF COURSE people want to be happy and ignore negative comments, but it’s easier said than done. That’s why it’s important to closely analyze this conversation and discover all the cheat codes hidden within it.

“Maybe they’re having a bad day.” CHEAT CODE ONE: Lilly, when people do or say hurtful things to you, there’s a chance they may actually be upset about something else in their life.

“Should other opinions impact what you think about yourself?” CHEAT CODE TWO: Lilly, sometimes when you hear other opinions you’ll feel pressured to change your own. Before you enter into situations in which you will be confronted with a lot of opinions, make sure you strongly believe your own.

“I don’t want to stop making videos, because they make me happy.” CHEAT CODE THREE: Your happiness is stronger than fear. You can continue battling fear as long as your videos, make you happy. Make sure you prioritize creating content that makes you happy; otherwise fear and negativity will slowly take over.

“Maybe I should reply to them.” CHEAT CODE FOUR: Recognize that replying was suggested to make you feel better. Understand this impulse and catch it before you act on it. Make yourself feel better in a more constructive way.

The cheat codes I discovered while dealing with YouTube comments have been useful in so many areas of my life. When someone cuts me off while driving, I apply cheat code one so that I don’t overreact: the person driving could be upset about something in their life. Cutting me off wasn’t about ME. When a brand offers me a lot of money to make a video I don’t actually like, I implement cheat code three: my content has to make me happy, otherwise negativity will start to seep in. When I’m having an argument and want to make an unnecessary remark to get the last word in, I try to catch myself because I know I’m just trying to make myself feel better—thus cheat code four. If I’ve gotten myself into an upsetting situation, it’s usually because I ignored a cheat code or pattern in my behavior.

Conquering your thoughts is not a task that can be accomplished overnight, or over many nights, to be honest. It’s an ongoing process that requires frequent readjustment because your mind is constantly evolving. It requires you to ask yourself a lot of questions and to analyze the answers honestly. From now on start asking yourself WHY you feel a certain way, WHAT made you perform a certain action, and HOW you could do things differently. The information you discover is powerful because it helps you to discover patterns and in turn use your mind productively and efficiently. After all, your mind is your most powerful tool, but it’s not useful if you don’t know how to use it. It’s like trying to fix a printer with a stapler: it doesn’t work. Trust me, I’ve tried.

The key is to use a hammer because all printers suck.

Lilly Singh: The Bawse of Personal and Professional Change
By D. Gonzales
I purchased the hardcover edition of this book. The book if of high quality physically which is the very first thing I noticed. The content of the book is divided into four parts, Each chapter includes portions to involve the reader to maintain a higher level of engagement. I find these are often the best books because they really do make the reader internalize the knowledge presented. Essentially, if you just want to pass the time with a YouTuber's biography, read Lindsey Stirling and Brooke Passey's biography of Lindsey's early career "The Only Pirate At The Party". It is designed to be a read through. HTBAB is not. You will grow if you take your time and do the exercises.

I found Lilly Singh through violinist Lindsey Stirling. Rather, fellow fans kept mentioning her so I finally looked her up. I honestly didn't really know who she was until shortly before VidCon 2016. What touched me about Lilly Singh is that she is the same person off camera as she is on camera. She was launching her new GirlLove social project, and was so excited I thought she was going to go crowd surfing. Miss Singh is a hard working, and passionate individual spreading a positive message of strength for all genders and ages. HTBAB is a tool of outreach to those who want to better themselves both personally and professionally. It is only because I saw the consistency between online and offline integrity that I pre-ordered this book. When you look beyond the sets, the celebrities, the makeup, Lilly Singh is a woman who is out to make thigns happen for herself and the world united. Buy this book. You can't afford not to.

I'm a 36 years young woman who found love with Lilly's positivity
By Grace Williams
I haven't have finished this book yet, but it has already changed my life. I'm a 36 years young woman who found love with Lilly's positivity. I wanted to book because I'm looking forward to making big changes in my life and you the motivation. I have a 10 year old who was diagnosed with ADHD. We've been having issues with discipline and teaching him self-love. He read the first chapter because it was titled "Nintendo". This kid loves his video games. Because of her analogy, I was able to explain to my son that I was his Game Designer. When I set rules I am not the enemy. I am only making the rules to give him more skills and character. Now when we fight I remind him that I am not trying to hurt him I'm trying to grow him. Fights don't last long and he goes to bed reading "How to be a Bawse" every night! I think I'm going to have to order another book if I am going to read it.

Although I love Lilly Singh's vlog
By Dr. G---Constant Reader
Although I love Lilly Singh's vlog, movie, and lipstick, I was a little concerned that this book would be so filled with pop cultural references that the meat might get obscured. Happily not, and I should have known better! The book is interesting, fast-paced, and Lilly's tone comes through in every line. In addition, I love a woman who is not afraid to use semicolons correctly.

Focusing on the languages used in X86 microprocessors, X86 Assembly Language and C Fundamentals explains how to write programs in the X86 assembly language, the C programming language, and X86 assembly language modules embedded in a C program. A wealth of program design examples, including the complete code and outputs, help you grasp the concepts more easily. Where needed, the book also details the theory behind the design.

Learn the X86 Microprocessor Architecture and Commonly Used Instructions

Assembly language programming requires knowledge of number representations, as well as the architecture of the computer on which the language is being used. After covering the binary, octal, decimal, and hexadecimal number systems, the book presents the general architecture of the X86 microprocessor, individual addressing modes, stack operations, procedures, arrays, macros, and input/output operations. It highlights the most commonly used X86 assembly language instructions, including data transfer, branching and looping, logic, shift and rotate, and string instructions, as well as fixed-point, binary-coded decimal (BCD), and floating-point arithmetic instructions.

Its OK...
By Elise
The author states on Page 217 that the focus of the book is to present X86 code segment modules embedded in C code.

He tells you how the vast majority of the operands and instructions in X86 are manipulated but doesn't elaborate on how it is used in any actual programs (i.e. he doesn't examine an executable file or anything like that).

Maybe this works for you and maybe it doesn't, IMO this is the first book but certainly not the last book you should buy on X86.

Be sure to check out Igor Zhirkov's "Low-Level Programming" as soon as it is available...it looks very promising and may plug the holes I had with Cavanagh.

Should become the new gold standard for Assembly Language texts
By ninewest57th
I found this book to be one of the best texts on the market for learning Assembly Language. I have read the books by the current two giants of Assembly Language instruction (Randall Hyde and Kip Irvine). This book is better than both of those texts. It is a big book 800+ pages but explains everything very clearly and has detailed answers to many questions in the back of the book.

The two 'problems' I had with the book was that Amazon does not provide a look inside for this text. This makes it difficult for someone to select the book as there is very little found about Professor Cavanagh's teaching methods via Google searches.
The second issue is that the book is missing a link to locations from which one can download MASM, TASM, FASM or NASM (the assemblers that can be used with this book). One can always find this information via Google; but, it would have been nice to have it readily available in an appendix of the book.

“Jon Levy is what happens when you mix a behavioral scientist like Robert Cialdini with Indiana Jones.” —Lewis Howes, New York Times bestselling author of The School of Greatness

Jon Levy used to be a nerd.

Now, he runs with the bulls in Pamplona, battles Kiefer Sutherland in Jenga, and crashes million-dollar weddings. How did he do it? The E.P.I.C. Model of Adventure, a breakthrough four-step process (Establish, Push Boundaries, Increase, Continue) for building the perfect adventure, from picking the right team, to choosing the right mission, and taking the right risks—with plenty of stories from his own exploits to show you how it’s done.

With the mold-breaking brilliance of Timothy Ferriss’s The 4-Hour Work Week, and the geeky enthusiasm of a TED Talk, this book is your ticket to the next level. You’ll learn plenty, but the first lesson is easy: nothing good happens after 2 AM—except the most EPIC experiences of our lives.

Fun, useful, but a little much at points
By Amazon Customer
I enjoyed it and got some useful insights out of it. The reason for the four is that it started to get out of hand and read more like bragging than advice. I know this book is written by an expert and the examples are intended to be exemplars rather than the boring stuff I do, but when every chapter involves jetting off to Europe then partying in Beverly Hills it comes to the point of, good for you buddy but how can I relate to this. In that respect it got a little grinding. Overall though interesting and I think it would be useful for a lot of people wondering why their weekends are so dull.

You probably have better stories than the author of this book
By R. Brennan Knotts
This book isn't scientific. It's not even anecdotally insightful. The entire book is built off of the author's stories of drunken nights out with friends. None of them are particularly unique and some of them are downright boring. I have better stories than what this author recounts and I don't consider myself that adventurous.

That being said, the most disappointing part of this book is his framework for adventure. It's useless. His "tips and tricks" for making a night adventurous are too high-level to be actionable or unoriginal and are too dependent on situations involving alcohol-induced lowered inhibitions.

Another real kicker is that he dedicates a whole chapter at the very end to his confession that the book isn't actually scientific (as if that wasn't obvious throughout). He more or less pleads with you to take him seriously though because he's talked to a lot of people about what makes an evening fun. In other words, he dedicates a whole chapter to patronizing you.

Good book but not practical advise for the world population.
By Mark Twain
Fun to read. Never gets boring or drags. Has some good scientific advise about living a life out of comfort zone.

However, its NOT practical! Especially if one does not live in a first world country like the author or has a first world country passport to travel to where one pleases ( without needing visas) and one is at the right age and looks to have goodlooking female friends to be a partner in the adventures. Most of the athors adeventures were in company of good looking women who were already his friends.

Having said that, I enjoyed reading the book and I would keep it in my book selection. If you are 20 something from UK or USA or Australia and have a boring life, I highly recommend this book to you!

The Software Project Manager's Bridge to Agility, by Michele Sliger, Stacia Broderick

When software development teams move to agile methods, experienced project managers often struggle—doubtful about the new approach and uncertain about their new roles and responsibilities. In this book, two long-time certified Project Management Professionals (PMPRs) and Scrum trainers have built a bridge to this dynamic new paradigm. They show experienced project managers how to successfully transition to agile by refocusing on facilitation and collaboration, not “command and control.”

The authors begin by explaining how agile works: how it differs from traditional “plan-driven” methodologies, the benefits it promises, and the real-world results it delivers. Next, they systematically map the Project Management Institute’s classic, methodology-independent techniques and terminology to agile practices. They cover both process and project lifecycles and carefully address vital issues ranging from scope and time to cost management and stakeholder communication. Finally, drawing on their own extensive personal experience, they put a human face on your personal transition to agile--covering the emotional challenges, personal values, and key leadership traits you’ll need to succeed.

Coverage includes

  • Relating the PMBOKR Guide ideals to agile practices: similarities, overlaps, and differences
  • Understanding the role and value of agile techniques such as iteration/release planning and retrospectives
  • Using agile techniques to systematically and continually reduce risk
  • Implementing quality assurance (QA) where it belongs: in analysis, design, defect prevention, and continuous improvement
  • Learning to trust your teams and listen for their discoveries
  • Procuring, purchasing, and contracting for software in agile, collaborative environments
  • Avoiding the common mistakes software teams make in transitioning to agile
  • Coordinating with project management offices and non-agile teams
  • “Selling” agile within your teams and throughout your organization

For every project manager who wants to become more agile.

About the Author

Michele Sliger has extensive experience in agile software development, having transitioned to Scrum and XP practices in 2000 after starting her career following the traditional waterfall approach. A self-described “bridge builder,” her passion lies in helping those in traditional software development environments cross the bridge to agility. Michele is the owner of Sliger Consulting Inc., where she consults with businesses ranging from small startups to Fortune 500 companies, helping teams with their agile adoption, and helping organizations prepare for the changes that agile adoption brings. A frequent conference speaker and regular contributor to software industry publications, Michele is a strong advocate of agile principles and value-driven development practices. She is a certified Project Management Professional (PMPR) and a Certified Scrum Trainer (CST). She has an undergraduate MIS degree and an MBA. When not working, Michele volunteers as a grief facilitator for teens at Judi’s House, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children learn how to cope with the loss of a loved one.

Stacia Broderick has worked as a project manager for fifteen years, the last eight in software development. She was fortunate to be helped across the bridge under the mentorship of Ken Schwaber while working for Primavera Systems in 2003 and ever since has helped hundreds of teams the world over embrace the principles of and transition to an agile way of creating products. Stacia founded her company, AgileEvolution, Inc., in 2006 based on the belief that agile practices present a humane, logical way for teams and companies to deliver products. Stacia is a Certified Scrum Trainer as well as a PMPR, a mix that proves valuable when assisting organizations’ transition from traditional to modern practices. Stacia enjoys running, playing classical violin, and spending time with her family.

Preface Preface

We are dedicated to the use of Agile practices in software development (a.k.a. Agilists), but we didn't start out that way. We began as Project Management Professionals (PMP) 1 who used more traditional methods in the development of software.

Why We Wrote This Book

We followed the approaches outlined in the Project Management Institute's A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge—Third Edition (PMBOK Guide) for much of our careers, and in moving to Agile approaches we became more aware of the misconceptions out there surrounding the subject matter of this book—incorrect ideas that we once believed as well. Now as Agile consultants, we continue to hear our clients say that they believe (incorrectly) that if they are to keep their PMP certification and follow the practices outlined in the PMBOK Guide that they must use a waterfall-like methodology. We also hear the mistaken belief that Agile approaches lack discipline and rigor. And we see the fear and dismay of those who believe that their investment in the Project Management Institute (PMI) may be for naught if they follow the path to agility.

It is our goal to dispel these myths in our book and show that the Third Edition of the PMBOK Guide does in fact support Agile software development methods and that the investment that project managers have made in the PMI and in the practices outlined in the PMBOK Guide are still solid and appropriate to pursue. It is clear to us that the PMBOK Guide is methodology-neutral and supports good project management practices regardless of the approach chosen. Although many are already aware of this fact, we find that there are still many who are not. As PMPs who are now Agile enthusiasts, we feel it is important to also dispel the mistaken notion in the Agile community that PMPs cannot be good Agile project managers. We would like to build a bridge between the two, thus the need for this book.

Structure and Content of the Book

Accordingly, we've put much of the detail concerning this bridging in Part II, where we map the PMBOK Guide's practices to Agile practices. It is our intent to show project managers that in moving to an Agile methodology, they do not move away from implementing PMI-recommended practices—they simply implement the practices in a different way, making sure that the intent behind these practices remains true. In some chapters you'll find a clear mapping, whereas in others the mapping is more imprecise. This book is intended to be a guide, a way to take the lexicon you are already familiar with and relate it to a new way of developing software. This book will not replace any of the more specific Agile practice books in the market today, and we encourage you to supplement this reading with other books on particular Agile methods (Scrum, XP, Lean, Crystal, and so on).

The next several sections provide a quick preview of the book.

Part I: An Agile Overview

Part I introduces you to the basic terms and concepts of Agile software development. We begin in the first chapter ("What is Agile?") with a look back at the emergence of agile ideas in the history of software development. You may be surprised to learn that even Winston Royce's paper on the waterfall approach recommended an iterative cycle and the involvement of the end user in the whole of the project! From this history we move forward and review the concepts behind the Agile Manifesto and its associated principles, which are the basis of all agile software development frameworks.

In Chapter 2, "Mapping from the PMBOK Guide to Agile," we look at the history of the PMI and its most famous contribution to the practice of project management, the PMBOK Guide. We'll examine how the PMBOK Guide project lifecycle phases and project management process groups can be related to the Agile Fractal. And we'll reiterate again that you can be agile and be in keeping with the recommendations outlined in the PMBOK Guide.

Chapter 3, "The Agile Project Lifecycle," describes the agile project lifecycle—from release planning to iteration planning to daily planning—and how demos, reviews, and retrospectives at the end of each iteration allow the team to continually improve. This chapter begins the use of terminology and concepts that we expand on throughout the rest of the book.

Part II: The Bridge: Relating PMBOK Guide Practices to Agile Practices

This is the part of the book where we review each of the PMBOK Guide knowledge areas and discuss what you used to do as a traditional project manager, and what you should consider doing instead as an agile project manager. As the title implies, we are trying to build an explicit bridge between the traditional and the agile, and provide you with guidance on what tasks and activities you should substitute—or keep.

As it is in the PMBOK Guide, the knowledge areas are not in any type of chronological order. In both traditional and agile project management settings, you will find yourself doing most of these activities in parallel.

Because there is some overlap in the knowledge areas, you may find some ideas and concepts repeated. We did this intentionally, because we expect many of you to use this part of the book as a reference guide, and may therefore start with any of these chapters in any order. However, to keep the repetition to a minimum, we do use references to other chapters rather than rewrite large sections.

The chapters in Part II include the following:

  • Chapter 4: "Integration Management"

  • Chapter 5: "Scope Management"

  • Chapter 6: "Time Management"

  • Chapter 7: "Cost Management"

  • Chapter 8: "Quality Management"

  • Chapter 9: "Human Resources Management"

  • Chapter 10: "Communications Management"

  • Chapter 11: "Risk Management"

  • Chapter 12: "Procurement Management"

Part III: Crossing the Bridge to Agile

Whereas Part II covers the specific practical activity changes, Part III covers the softer skills of being an agent of change and what this change means for you personally and professionally. Having answered much of the "what" you need to do in Part II, we turn our focus to "how" to make these changes in Part III. From how your role changes, to how you'll work with others who aren't agile, to what to watch out for, we respond to the commonly asked questions of those who are about to cross the bridge. The chapters in Part III complete the main body of the book:

  • Chapter 13: "How Will My Role as a Project Manager Change?"

  • Chapter 14: "How Will I Work with Other Teams Who Aren't Agile?"

  • Chapter 15: "How Can a Project Management Office Support Agile? "

  • Chapter 16: "Selling the Benefits of Agile"

  • Chapter 17: "Common Mistakes"

Appendixes

We've included two appendixes we hope you will find useful. Appendix A, "Agile Methodologies," runs down a number of the software development methodologies that fall under the Agile umbrella. Appendix B, "Typical Agile Artifacts," includes a look at the typical Agile project "artifacts."

Who This Book Is For

Although this book is targeted at software project managers who are members of the PMI, anyone who is doing traditional software project management will benefit from seeing agility presented in terminology to which they are accustomed. We will refer to these long-established methodologies as "waterfall," "plan-driven," or "traditional," all of which refer to sequential, phased, noniterative approaches to software development.

Final Thoughts

We should also make it clear that we are not sanctioned by PMI or any of its representatives. This book is the result of our research, interpretation, and experience. Although we used the Third Edition of the PMBOK Guide in our studies, we expect that as the PMBOK Guide goes through further revisions, you will still find the concepts presented here to be relevant.

Agile and PMI are Compatible!
By J. Deville
Finally a book in the agile series that acknowledges agile and PMI are compatible. As a PMP and CSM, one of my long time frustrations has been too many agile authors create a stereotype of an overly bureaucrat waterfall process being managed by a dictator project manager. That may be a great way to sell their books, but their rejection of sound project management principles has been a disservice to the industry--the classic mistake of throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

As the title states, Sliger and Broderick sets out to bridge this divide and does a super job showing how agile management practices fit into the project management body of knowledge (PMBOK). They reinforce this message with extensive quotes from the PMBOK that explicitly address incremental and iterative development. I especially like their chapter summaries which compare and contrast project manager approaches to specific practices under a plan-driven and an agile project. One of their key messages is that project managers should allow the team to focus on the current iteration, allowing the project managers to focus on removing impediments to future work. This is sound advice no matter what development framework you are using.

Sliger and Broderick discussion on how agile is being extended to product and release planning and how it's adapting to interfacing with PMOs and non-agile teams is also very relevant. While agile purest reject such notions, these are issues that my clients are facing today. Sliger and Broderick succinctly summarize the current thinking on agile product and release planning and provide sound advice on adapting agile to meet these real-world needs.

One shortcoming in the book is that the authors imply that agile is the silver-bullet that should always be used. I wished they would have acknowledge that while agile methods are appropriate in many situations; plan-driven methods are the appropriate choice for other situations. (See Balancing Agility and Discipline: A Guide for the Perplexed by Barry Boehm and Richard Turner)

I highly recommend this book and will be adding to our seminars reference lists. It is especially useful to experienced project managers. As the product description (see above) states they often struggle while transitioning to agile. However, I don't think they are doubtful about the approach, but instead are confused by the hype they encounter. It will also be useful to agilest who starting to see through the hype in other books. Sliger and Broderick have cut through the hype and reinforce the point that effective project management principles still apply.

An important book
By Bas Vodde
When I saw this book, I knew I had to read it, though I was very skeptical about it. Mapping the PMBOK practices to agile practices, is that the right thing to do? Why would you want to do that? What are the authors trying to prove?

The first chapter already helped me forward and removed some of my skepticism. This book is really what is says it is. It's a bridge for the traditional PMI project manager to understand what the difference is between traditional projects and agile projects and it's written in the language of a traditional project manager, the language of PMBOK. From that perspective, I've come to see this as an smart and important book thatm hopefully, will help lots of trainer project managers to understand what agile development is trying to do and why.

The book start with an introduction by Stacia, who describes her experience moving from a traditional environment to an agile environment and the difficulty she faced of changing the way of working she was used to. An excellent introduction that sets the tone of the rest of the book.

The rest of the book consists of 3 parts (plus some appendixes). The first part is the "standard introduction" part in which Agile development gets introduced, in which the first mapping of Agile development to the PMBOK is made and ends with a chapter on a generic agile lifecycle model, which is a guideline for the rest of the book.

The second part is the main part of the book and is structured around the different chapters of the PMBOK. This part actually maps to the PMBOK even on sub-chapter level, done quite well. Within each of the PMBOK chapters, the authors explain the problems the PMBOK tries to solve and how Agile practices solve the same problems, but in a different way. It summarizes this in every chapter with a comparison between traditional practices and Agile practices.

All the chapters seem to cover all the major agile project management practices. It starts with integration management and discussing how all things integrate together and how changes are managed. From there it moves to scope control and explains the differences between traditional WBS task breakdowns and working in a more feature-based way. Time management is next, covering the different planning cycles in the generic agile lifecycle framework (they introduced in Chapter 3). Next is cost management, and quality management. Chapter 9 covers human resource management and was a really nice chapter in which the authors describe well the difference between traditional project resourcing and trying to work with fixed teams that can actually learn new skills when needed. By this time, I felt the major topics had been covered, but there still needed to be communications management and Risk Management to make the mapping of the PMBOK complete. Here I felt the authors started repeating things that were covered earlier, but thats the risk when copying a fixed structure. The last chapter in the PMBOK mapping is procurement management and this chapter was a disappointment to me. The authors are of opinion that there is not much difference in this area, while personally I would not agree with that. Anyways.

The third part covers "the rest" with the main chapter probably be 13 which discusses about the changes in responsibilities between a traditional project manager and an "agile project manager". It describes in fairly much detail the changes in behavior and even tries to cover how to get past this difficult change and why people would want to go through the change (whats in it for them). Also chapter 15 answers one important question: What to do with the PMO. The authors suggest transforming it into an agile supporting organization which they still call "Agile PMO".

Chapter 16 (Selling benefits of Agile) and Chapter 17 (Common Mistakes) are useful chapters for people who are driving the change. It helps them answer some of the common questions and deal with some of the resistance. These chapters conclude the book.

In many areas, I'm still skeptical and do not always agree with the authors. I don't know if it's a good idea to change peoples and organizations role and still keep the old name, like "agile project manager" and "agile PMO". Scrum has solved this by simply calling it different: when the behavior is different then also call it different. Hence the ScrumMaster. Also, the authors strongly stick to the "project thinking" and seem at assume that thats a good way of a managing work. Same with contracts, the authors don't seem to think there will be much change in that area. The book has not convinced me the PMBOK is a good idea either, instead just confirmed my earlier criticism.

All tht said. Realistically, I understand that much of these aspect will not change or not quickly. So, this book introduces new concepts in a familiar language. I do think this will be needed and the authors done a great (perhaps the best possible) job in explaining agile concepts in traditional terms without losing it's meaning. This was the purpose of the book and it certainly succeeded in that.

For project managers looking at agile development, this book is an absolute must.
For agilists, the book is still a good and useful read! (also to understand traditional thinking)

Great work!

Excellent advice for project managers making the change to agile
By Michael Cohn
This excellent book is targeted directly at Project Management Professionals (PMPs) but will be extremely beneficial to any project manager who is interested in agile development.

After three short chapters that introduce the general principles and activities of an agile software development project, the authors attack the meat of their subject. Each of the nine chapters of part two corresponds directly to one of the PMI's project management knowledge areas. Sliger and Broderick, each an experienced PMP, cover the changed responsibilities of the project manager transitioning to agile. A highlight of each chapter is the small table with columns for "I used to do this" and "Now I do this" that succinctly summarizes the often profound differences between traditional and agile project management.

This book is necessary reading for any project manager making the change to agile as well as for any ScrumMaster or agile coach working on a large projects. The book takes a giant stride toward dispelling the myth that the only role for project managers is to buy pizza and soda and get out of the way.
