About the Author
Born in Haifa, Israel, David Deutsch was educated at Cambridge and Oxford Universities. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a professor of physics at the University of Oxford, where he is a member of the Centre for Quantum Computation. His papers on quantum computation laid the foundations for that field, and he is an authority on the theory of parallel universes. His honors include the Institute of Physics' Paul Dirac Prize and Medal. The author of The Fabric of Reality, he lives in England.

The Beginning of Infinity by David Deutsch - a book review

If this book were as difficult to understand as some of the comments on it are, it would not be one I'd want to read! I'm no scientist but I wanted to give it a try because I'd heard David Deutsch speaking and found him very easy to follow and absolutely fascinating, and I wanted more.

Having read the book three times (and the bit about the Infinity Hotel four times to figure out what happened to the puppy!) and finding that I am getting more out of it with each reading, I can understand that it may be controversial in some respects, but I don't understand why it is attracting such intense and bizarre hostility. What am I missing? For me, the writing is crystal clear, charming and riveting, like the author himself when you hear him speak -- it's a sheer delight to read. It made me laugh out loud several times -- I LOVE that the author's sense of humor comes through even in what is a very deep, important book. And it even moved me to tears.

The subject matter is super wide-ranging, including stuff about physics and mathematics (no formulas, thankfully), beauty (yes, really!), voting systems (why proportional voting systems are fundamentally unfair despite the best intentions of those proposing them), environmentalism (why we have it all wrong!), intriguing stuff about culture, history, philosophy, etc., etc. David Deutsch is truly a polymath.

But what I personally find so enthralling is the way reading this book is challenging me and changing the way I think. I love the way all the apparently disparate issues are united in a single, coherent worldview having implications far beyond just what David Deutsch discusses in this book. As best I can tell, the author's worldview is vibrantly positive, optimistic (not to be confused with unrealistic), and rational (in the sense of being in favor of progress, solving problems and ending misery and suffering) -- a fundamentally humane worldview -- a beautiful, life-affirming, shining-beacon-of-light sort of worldview. For me, it has the ring of truth. Evidently for others, it is the work of the devil. But for anyone who loves ideas and thinking about things, The Beginning of Infinity is worth reading whether or not you agree with the author's ideas.

The wildest ride at the Intellectual Amusement Park: buckle up, stay alert, and keep your hesitations safely inside the cranium.

A compelling "sequel" to his earlier "The Fabric of Reality: The Science of Parallel Universes--and Its Implications," I feel this is as close as we will ever get to Monty Python's or Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker quests for "the meaning of life, the universe and everything." Not a lightweight read (the answer "42" IS substantially shorter but somewhat less accessible.) The famed mathematical physicist tackles The Hard Question of "How Do We Think" -- and how do we, as humans, communicate that thinking so other humans can comprehend, internalize and build upon our knowledge. Like Thomas Kuhn nearly fifty years earlier, Deutsch shines his powerful intellectual spotlight on the compelling *explanations* that are the "shoulders of giants" upon which Newton claimed to stand. Many other species communicate, but only The Naked Ape tells stories, to "experience" the experiences of others -- essentially a seventh sense that allows us to acquire knowledge of "action at a distance" (in space OR time) potential essential to our success or survival.

Possibly disturbing to readers with epistemologically 'thin skin,' Deutsch not only "does not suffer fools gladly," he barely suffers (and directly disparages) numerous popular points of view as to 'what constitutes a good explanation,' classifying them as a theme and variation of modern mythology. But I believe it wise to listen and take seriously his analyses and to read twice or three times before evaluating, as he clearly IS one of the deep thinkers of our day. This relatively recent work is directly relevant to the very-in-vogue Vinge/Kurzweil notion of a rapidly approaching Technological Singularity, the exponential explosion of combined human knowledge that, in a kind of sociopolitical Dirac delta function, heads off towards the Infinity that is the eponymous theme of his book. So buckle up, stay alert, and keep your hesitations safely inside the car on the near-vertical ascent of the impending E-ticket ride that you and I and seven billion close relatives are about to embark upon, genuinely The Beginning of Infinity

There are no bounds to what is knowable

Feeling starved of intellectual engagement? Is PBS failing to meet your craving for mental stimulation? Is your spouse tired of listening to your pontifications on the origins of the universe? Well, good news then: David Deutsch is here to provide relief. “The Beginning of Infinity” is a wide-ranging book of ideas. Hard to pin down precisely, It offers a sampling of what I’d call “1 o’clock discussions.” You know the ones; they happen after the party guests have departed and only you and your best friend remain behind, staring at the ceiling, chatting as you finish the last drinks of the night.

Deutsch, equal parts physicist (his actual day job) and philosopher, creates a carefully constructed argument designed to prove that there are no theoretical limits on human knowledge. Can we stop the aging process? Given enough knowledge, sure. After all, the complexity of the problem is finite, and the biological processes underlying the aging process are relatively well understood. Given enough time and resources for the necessary research, there’s no reason that humans can’t prevent aging from occurring. (The practical implications of such an outcome would be fascinating, but that’s not the focus of the book.) Basically, Deutsch argues that any physical process that is not precluded by laws of nature (like traveling faster than the speed of light, for example) is achievable given sufficient knowledge and that if we don’t have that knowledge right now, we can obtain it.

The foundation of his proof rests on two basic truisms: that in any endeavor problems are inevitable, and that all problems are soluble given sufficient knowledge.

One of the many meanings of “infinity” (which he carefully lays out at the end of each chapter’s summary) is that there are no limits on what can be known. He says that suggesting that there are “bounds on the domains in which reason is the proper arbiter of ideas is a belief in unreason or the supernatural.” He buttresses his argument by offering a brief tour of history and The Enlightenment. Western civilization of the Pre-enlightenment remained stagnant during the Dark Ages specifically because organized authority squelched free inquiry and the creation of original conjectures which could be tested to conclusively rule out false ideas. Deutsch says that it is only through the creation of original conjectures that knowledge can be expanded. All assertions must be tested, and proof sought. Whatever is true withstands any degree of testing that one can muster, while that which is false crumbles. With the Enlightenment, explanatory knowledge became the most important determinant of physical events, not superstition or human authority. Once that occurred, the curve of charted knowledge growth became steep indeed with no end in sight.

Accepting that humans have the theoretical power to become infinitely knowledgable, doesn’t mean that getting there is easy. Here, Deutsch delves into his theories of “optimism.” Continuing to pursue knowledge through the solution of problems is fundamentally an exercise in optimism. We believe that a solutions exist, even if we haven’t yet found them. If we try to improve things and fail it's because we did not know enough in time. Civilizations that have collapsed did so because they had insufficient knowledge of how to save themselves or they ran out of time before a solution could be found. The inhabitants of Easter Island are highlighted as an example as well as (somewhat controversially) our own current predicament as a civilization faced with the challenge of dramatic climate change. Deutsch suggests that climate change is simply another example of a problem that needs sufficient knowledge with which to devise a solution.

Arguments like this can cause Deutsch to come across as cold and rational to a fault. While it’s hard to argue with the logic of his carefully constructed propositions, it can leave one searching for a little humanity behind the words. In this regard, “The Beginning of Infinity” can sometimes feel less like a late night conversation with a buddy and more like a lecture from Mr. Spock.

But, just as that begins to happen, he manages to branch off into another fascinating exploration of Ideas writ large, covering topics such as quantum mechanics, the Multiverse, the mathematical impossibility of truly representational government, memes, beauty, creativity, sustainability, artificial intelligence, and the concept of mathematical infinity. Each one of these explorations is tied to the basic premise of the infinite expansion of knowledge, though some less successfully than others. For example, his exploration of beauty is completely devoid of the ineffable emotions that most of us associate with that quality. This is perhaps one of the only realms where logic has less to offer than unjustifiable irrationality.

While not all of these topics hold together as a completely coherent whole, each is utterly fascinating in its own way (particularly his exploration of the multiverse, a concept so foreign to human experience, that the chapter calls for repeated readings to promote comprehension). Everything is so carefully laid out that you’re likely to be persuaded of Deutsch’s position that given enough time, there’s nothing that we can’t learn and that there are no problems which are insoluble. Overall, this book is a great source of brain food for anyone looking to sharpen their mental acuity, step out of the ordinary, and go for a walk with a brilliant mind.

Actually For Beginners

This was my first time reading any type of technical book since I left college. I was afraid that I wouldn't get much out of this guide, but it actually delivers. Set up in an easy to follow question and answer format, this particular book is actually appropriate for honest to goodness beginners. That is important if you are someone with no experience with PHP, SQL, etc. since a LOT of so called "beginner guides" expect readers to have some sort of familiarity with the information they are supposed to be teaching.

Since I desperately needed a book meant for beginners to help me with work and to customize a new blog I am happy I wasn't disappointed. So far it has helped me learn much more than I expected. As an added bonus, I was able to surprise my husband who works in network security and eats, sleeps, breathes, all things technological.

Great purchase

I really enjoyed the way that this book was laid out. I have taken the PHP final exam before but unfortunately did not pass. I gave up for a while but recently decided to give it another go. I tried one or two of the free books out there but nothing that was much help. Finally, I broke down and bought this book and I am glad I did. The author does a great job of breaking down each question into easy to understand lingo. It not only told me the correct answers to the question but also gave me an extremely detailed explanation of why it was the correct answer. I have been studying this book little by little over the past few days and already feel better about my skills. I would recommend it to anyone struggling with the PHP exam or job interview exam.

extremely helpful

I found PHP 100 tests, answers and explanations while looking for a book that would help me gain the knowledge I needed to pass this test. I have tried many other books similar to this but found all to be little or no help. I was thrilled with this books layout and easy to understand methods. Not only did this book give the answers but it gave the explanation as well which I found to be extremely helpful. After studying this book I now have the confidence that I will be able to not only pass the final examination but the job interview exam as well. I will definitely be using this book to brush up on my skills in the future as well.

About the Author
The late Gerald Cole worked and taught in a wide variety of large and small organisations in the public and private sectors. He held two non-executive directorships and was also an external examiner in CMS and DMS courses at Middlesex University. Phil, formerly advisor to Asia's highest paid CEO, worked for over 20 companies in almost as many countries prior to appointment as Senior Lecturer at Liverpool Business School. Having completed his Doctorate in Business Administration, at one of Europe's leading Business Schools, he went on to establish himself in academia, teaching at a range of universities. An experienced lecturer, he has an MA (distinction) in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, and frequently teaches on a range of business courses. In 2012 Phil's students nominated him for an Amazing Teacher Award. In addition, after being nominated by the Liverpool Business School, he received the University Award for outstanding impact on the student learning experience. Phil has written several books, including 'Management - Theory and Practice Ed 7' with Gerald Cole and, 'International Business and Management', both of which were published with Cengage. His books are popular texts on a range of business degree programmes. Phil lives on the Wirral with his wife Rebecca and three sons Toby, Jacob and Ben.

My "5-Star" rating.has nothing to do with the book itself

Trying to give a "Star" grade to this volume is difficult for a number of reasons. Production-wise, the volume follows the quality of all the other IDW collections of classic newspaper strips, using some of the bast reference material available. I always learn something new about the strip and Milton Caniff in the introductions, and this is no different. So, using that alone, I should give the book a "5-Star" rating. And, to be completely honest what keeps me from doing that has nothing to do with the book, itself.

The stories were the typical collection of world-wide adventures peppered with Caniff's assortment of female pulchritude. Canyon goes from one old lover to another battling Miss Lynx, being helped by Convoy, the love-sick war-waif, in the middle east, returning to the US to deal with old favorites Copper Calhoun and Summer Olsen and meeting Red Cross volunteer Alice Santa Fe on a Pacific Island tracking station. The stories are have many others, too, like Minerva Kaol who he meets in Europe and Flavin in Mexico. But this was the height of the cold-war and truly there were "reds under every bed" in these stories. Every tale seemed to deal with "commie spies"; Miss Lynx school for spies, Minerva Kaol sneaking across the Russian border, Flavin hypnotizing a diplomat's daughter to discredit the US. After a while, I found 2 years of these stories kind of redundant. I know that this reflected the times (and how little has changed in 60 years!!) and Caniff was a big supporter of the military, but I began to lose interest. That is certainly not this books's fault

The biggest reason I gave this a "4-Star" rating is more to do with packaging. I do not believe Amazon, or the people that actually pack the books (and sadly this came out during the height of the Christmas season), know or care about "collectors". I hate it when a brand new book arrives damaged and this one showed up with three dinged corners and a 3-inch tear in the dust jacket; I think it just banged around inside the shipping box and the cover was torn on one of the edges of cardboard. I don't know; I realize it is a trade-off. I could go to a bookstore and pay full price to hand-pick the "perfect copy" or buy a reduced price copy on Amazon and take my chances. Ideally, I'd like both. Since the ultimate goal is to read the stories and see the art perhaps I should just say c'est la vie.

All that being said, this is another high-quality volume that makes a great addition to library of this classic strip. I certainly intend to keep buying these volumes as long as they come out... red spies and all.

Steve Canyon Battles The Red Menance

IDW and The Library Of American Comics brings us another two years worth of Steve Canyon. This Volume covers the years 1959 and 1960. The restoration (as always) is perfect we get the combined story continuity with three Daily strips to a page in crisp Black & White. Then every third page is the Full Page Sunday strip fully restored in brilliant color. Bruce Canwell provides another entertaining introduction. This one focuses on the Steve Canyon TV Series which debuted around this time (1959-1960).

While last volume seemed to focus on Steve's cousin Poteet. Retroactively it seems many readers seemed to be annoyed with this character and seem to think these continuities are not Caniff's best. So those who disliked her Spotlight in Volume Six should be happy. Poteet only appears in two storylines. One is a very brief story about her High School graduation. Then finally she plays a more active role in the final adventure.

If this Volume has a theme it is the threat of Communism and the Nuclear Race Build Up. Most of the stories feature one or both of these elements.

In the first story Steve helps a homely girl named Minerva Koal. Minerva and Steve find themselves behind the Iron Curtain. Caniff's dwelling on Minerva's physical appearance seems very sexiest by today's standards.

In the next storyline set in the Middle East Madame Lynx returns. She is training a School for young female spies, Steve recruits his old flame Deen Wilderness to play a Communist Nurse.

Another old flame returns when Convoy becomes the leader of the deadly Black Widows.

Next up Steve gets a Stateside Mission at a Top Secret Missile Base. Copper Calhoon just happens to own property dangerously close to Base. Summer Olson (Copper's Minion) makes a big appearance and we get more of the Steve/Summer Heartbreak Story.

When the soap opera ends Steve gets assigned to help test a new secret plane in Alaska. A new Femme Fatale debuts named Mindee Ludeesch. She is disrupting everything. Is she a Red Spy?

In the next storyline Steve gets promoted to a Full Colonel. This is a version of the last story. This time two Red Cross women show up on an Island base and disrupst everything.

After Steve returns to the USA for Poteet's Graduation he is sent to Central America. Holly Hall a young woman from a previous story returns. She has been Brain Washed and is disgracing our country by doing outlandish things. Steve's solution is to make love to his friend's wife. Yes, you read that correctly. A strange Story.

Then in the final story Poteet goes to Japan in an effort to be with Steve. This is a big Poteet story that finishes this collection.

This Book gets my Highest Recommendation.

About the Author
NORMAN KEMP SMITH was born in Dundee in 1872 and died in Edinburgh in 1958. Between 1919 and 1945 he was Professor of Logic and Metaphysics at the University of Edinburgh. Amongst his books are New Studies in the Philosophy of Descartes, The Credibility of Divine Existence and his translation of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason.

DON GARRETT is Kenan Distinguished Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carlolina, Chapel Hill. He is the Co-Editor of the journal Hume Studies, and The Encyclopedia of Empiricism, author of Cognition and Commitment in Hume's Philosophy, editor of The Cambridge Companion to Spinoza and Early Modern Philosophy (OUP forthcoming).

Just how important is David Hume? He's the first modern empirical psychologist who anticipates William James by a century. He's also the first modern philosopher to extol experience alone as paramount to understanding human behavior as the first in the long line of Pragmatic philosophers. He's also the first modern philosopher to employ exclusively the scientific method of Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton as paradigmatic. He's the second (after Francis Hutcheson) to instantiate a naturalist and intuitionist ethic known as benevolent or sentimentalist theory. And besides which, he's one of the few major philosophers who is accessible to the general public.

But as accessible as Hume is, it's always helpful to have a reliable commentary to bring out the subtle nuances of a particular philosopher. Thus was A. E. Taylor to Plato, J. H. Randall to Aristotle, Brian Davies to Thomas Aquinas, and Norman Kemp Smith to David Hume. Written in the first-third of the 20thC., this artful and insightful commentary on Hume's basic writings, especially of Hume's "Treatise on Human Nature," is indispensable. Long out of print, Macmillan has corrected the deficit and reissued this important study that covers the antecedents, writings, and subsequent influence of David Hume.

Kemp's thesis is that one cannot understand Hume's project without first understanding Hume's moral epistemology and the ascendent influence of Hutcheson in forming it. Ironically, Hume's moral epistemology isn't made manifest until Part III of his youthful "Treatise," after dealing first with cognition and second the passions. Hume's method is entirely pragmatic in that experience alone, as opposed to a priori speculation, or even induction, is the sole means of understanding human cognition, belief, passions, and morals. Kemp also illustrates Hume's extreme method to avoid both dogmatism and skepticism, the two horns of the philosophers' dilemma that produce a quixotic approach that is uniquely Hume's. Consequently, Kemp's interpretation of Hume comes across as less an empricist and more rigorously a populizer of the "vulgar" in a non-philosophical sense. The only substantive subject Kemp omits is Hume's criticism of religion as superstition, but this omission is somewhat obvious and trivial in light of its natural consequence of Hume's overall experientialist, non-ratiocinative project.

Kemp's style, clarity, and incisiveness match his subject's. He spent thirty years pondering David Hume's thought and writings, and it wasn't until his insight about Hume's moral epistemology that everything came together for him as a coherent whole. And as tendentious as Kemp's thesis is, it's fully documented and carefully executed, so that even the skeptic must concede Kemp's invaluable contribution. Still, the omission concerning the "Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion" is lamentable, if only because it is of particular importance to Hume's experientialist project. An excellent alternative and complementary commentary, "Cognition and Commitment: Hume's Philosophy," by Dan Garrett is a more current, and a very different, approach. Both are very highly recommended.

Foundation for modern Hume studies

Norman Kemp Smith's work was, and is, deservedly a watershed in Hume's studies. While philosophy has moved on in its estimate and understanding of David Hume and his philosophy, Kemp Smith's work is clearly the fountainhead--whether one agrees or not with his essential view of Hume's epistemology/ anthropology. One either agrees with Kemp Smith and moves on--or one disagrees with Kemp Smith and then moves on. There is no ignoring him and even though this study was completed in the early 20th century it continues its impact today. Kemp Smith's acheivement here is important not simply because it is a good book, but because he is a patient exegete of the philosophy of Hume, carefully reading and rereading everything by and about Hume until the thesis presents itself to him. That precision and patience is worth learning from. Building upon his two articles in the philosophy journal "Mind" in 1905, Kemp Smith continued to reflect upon Hume's philosophy and its forebears who might have been influential to Hume's thought. We have been given in this study a book that others would do well to emulate. While many books have been written about Hume in the interim between the publication of this book in the 1940's and now, there are few who bring such intellectual integrity to their reading and explication of Hume. Kemp Smith's book was and is foundational and fundamental in understanding Hume the philosopher--to use Kuhn's language of paradigms--its heuristic nature is beyond question. As a model it held tremendous sway. It continues to do so. It presents a careful argument that is a model of precision, of scholarly acumen, and intellectual brilliance, and of a careful, painstaking, thoughtful reading and interpretation. One will not only learn about David Hume and his thought, but also about the "reading," the "doing," and the "writing" of philosophy from Kemp Smith's achievement. A must read!
