Lots of money, coffee, and time (and a Masters degree in decoding educational jargon) necessary to read this book

This book was required reading for a Master's course on Curriculum Development. Since no preview is available, I will list the tablet of content below:

15. Individualizing the Curriculum
Chapters 1-4 are tough sledding. I struggled trying to understand these passages-- written like an educational encyclopedia, riddled with educational jargon. Page-after-page, I kept asking myself questions such as, "What is the significance of this paragraph?" "Wait, what does that mean?" "And, this is important because....?"
Although it never becomes enjoyable reading, the coherency of the writing and pace of reading begins to pick up during Chapter 6, only to take a dive shortly therefore (Chapters 9-12). As a classroom teacher, Chapters 13-15 were the chapters I found most interesting, but I use that phrase very loosely.
While it was not directly stated, the book is clearly aimed primarily at curriculum leaders such as principals and superintendents. As a classroom teacher, it was difficult to make most of the book applicable.
My guess is that if you're reading this review, you have no choice in purchasing/reading this book because it is likely required reading according to your merciless professor. While I never recommend "skimming," my advice is to get what you need from this book, but slow down to read the charts and tables. In my opinion, if you read the tablets/charts, you will understand the bulk of this textbook. If you are a person who will have a future in curriculum development, don't "rent" the book (tempting as that will be, considering the astronomical cost) because it provides step-by-step procedures regarding how to plan, assemble, and develop meetings and procedures necessary to change, modify, and improve curriculum.
If, however, you do have a choice, run! Run away! Run to "Understanding By Design" (2nd Edition) by Wiggins. It is a much more interesting and applicable book for teachers wishing to improve their skill at planning units.

I have taken many education classes throughout two masters programs and my undergrad studies. I have never had to read a book as bad as this one. I despised every second that I spent trying to decipher whatever theoretical nonsense these authors were spewing. I cried a few times. In other reviews, some have felt that the book improved after the first few chapters. I was so angry after the first five that I never made it to those later chapters. This is the kind of book where you literally struggle paragraph to paragraph to make sense of what you are reading. One researcher's theory blends into the next, with no clues given as to how it all fits together. You can read a 30 page chapter and feel like you didn't learn a thing. The book is sorely lacking in examples and anecdotes. I have never written a review before but felt that fellow educators needed to know-- if there is anything you can do to take a curriculum course that doesn't require you to use this book, please do yourself a favor and make it happen.

It's a textbook - can't say that I gained anything Earth-shattering from it. Unfortunately few of us in the class read this one as it is dry and overpriced.
