A solid effort from Scientific American

This book is a collection of previously published essays. A few were weak, and some didn't apply to my situation, but on the whole it was a very valuable read.

Good book for seniors like me

Dandy little book. Very helpful material for my age group (I'm 76). Memory, psychological resilience material was especially helpful. As might be expected from the authors of Scientific American many of the ideas are based on recent brain research. I will referring back to this material regularly for its many helpful suggestions.

Committing to Lasting Personal Change

Ah, the infamous "C" words - commitment to change.

How difficult it can be! And how easy it is to go along the well-trod path of familiar habits.

That's what makes this recent collection of articles from "Scientific American" by its editors so interesting and helpful.

Under the title "Breaking Bad (Habits)" - no association to the TV series of the same name though the main character does drastically change his routines - the book draws from articles published from 2007 through 2014. Some scientific, some pragmatic and instructional in a conversational style - all are well informed.

These articles are grouped into seven sections:

1. Change is in the Mind: five articles that explore why and how we can overcome and mange stress – a root cause for forming bad habits - and practical suggestions for boosting brainpower. And life satisfaction

Interesting observation: personality is the single biggest factor in self-perception of well being (the big five personality traits: openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism).

2. Mastering Good Habits: three articles discussing the difficulty with changing habits, supporting those who are trying to change from “diablos conocidos” (the devil you know) and encouraging will power

Interesting observation: the attitude difference between “Will I?” vs. “I will.”

3. Getting Past Procrastination: three pieces discussing reasons we postpone taking action to change habits, particularly the vagueness of future results relative to immediate actions needed to initiate change

Interesting observation: negative emotions diminish self-control.

4. The Beauty of Self-Discipline: six discussions of the conflicts between impulsive behavior and self-control with observations about how small rewards now are more desirable than bigger ones later without self-imposed intervention and a fascinating piece on the challenges of weight loss, including unexpected consequences of bariatric surgery

Interesting observation: being willing to endure pain to get to a desired substance is the hallmark of addiction.

5. Mindfulness is Happiness: three articles exploring the importance of living in the present (mindfulness) versus the future or past (wandering mind), including a nine-step guide for a 10 – 15 minute daily exercise to help achieve and benefit from achieving a focus on “now”

Interesting observation: success is related to happiness – but as a consequence, not a cause, of the mood.

6. Tips for Self-Improvement: four pieces that explore different pragmatic ways to develop and sustain better habits leading to more personal happiness

Interesting observation: psychological capital for personal success is a special blend of four qualities: efficacy (self-confidence), resilience, hope, and optimism.

7. New Year’s Resolutions: three final pieces that reinforce not only the goals but also the on-going commitment to pursuing the goals for self-improvement, be it attitude improvement, weight loss or long-term relationships with others

Interesting observation: Of the ten most frequent positive emotions for sustaining relationships, gratitude on a regular basis may be the most important because it shows open appreciation for acts by a partner that could be taken for granted.

The writing styles vary since there are many authors. Some are easy and comfortable, some a little more detailed and possibly obscure. For this reason I gave the collection four stars.

Certainly, the practical guides are easy to follow, though there is a lot to take in and ponder. For those looking for more actionable steps you may want to read the last two chapters first. However, there are some earlier outlines that are also helpful (see comments above).

Finally, an important concept underlying all these articles is: to succeed, a personal change for whatever reason must be seen as a on-going commitment to a new routine, if you will.

The approaches presented are not for people taking a crash diet to lighten up, then, go back to eating the way they did when they put on all that weight.

Nobody said it was easy but you just might find these thoughts can help you get going and finding a happier you.

Lots of money, coffee, and time (and a Masters degree in decoding educational jargon) necessary to read this book

This book was required reading for a Master's course on Curriculum Development. Since no preview is available, I will list the tablet of content below:

13. Current Developments in the Subject Fields
14. Current Developments Across the Curriculum
15. Individualizing the Curriculum

Chapters 1-4 are tough sledding. I struggled trying to understand these passages-- written like an educational encyclopedia, riddled with educational jargon. Page-after-page, I kept asking myself questions such as, "What is the significance of this paragraph?" "Wait, what does that mean?" "And, this is important because....?"

Although it never becomes enjoyable reading, the coherency of the writing and pace of reading begins to pick up during Chapter 6, only to take a dive shortly therefore (Chapters 9-12). As a classroom teacher, Chapters 13-15 were the chapters I found most interesting, but I use that phrase very loosely.

While it was not directly stated, the book is clearly aimed primarily at curriculum leaders such as principals and superintendents. As a classroom teacher, it was difficult to make most of the book applicable.

My guess is that if you're reading this review, you have no choice in purchasing/reading this book because it is likely required reading according to your merciless professor. While I never recommend "skimming," my advice is to get what you need from this book, but slow down to read the charts and tables. In my opinion, if you read the tablets/charts, you will understand the bulk of this textbook. If you are a person who will have a future in curriculum development, don't "rent" the book (tempting as that will be, considering the astronomical cost) because it provides step-by-step procedures regarding how to plan, assemble, and develop meetings and procedures necessary to change, modify, and improve curriculum.

If, however, you do have a choice, run! Run away! Run to "Understanding By Design" (2nd Edition) by Wiggins. It is a much more interesting and applicable book for teachers wishing to improve their skill at planning units.

I have taken many education classes throughout two masters programs and my undergrad studies. I have never had to read a book as bad as this one. I despised every second that I spent trying to decipher whatever theoretical nonsense these authors were spewing. I cried a few times. In other reviews, some have felt that the book improved after the first few chapters. I was so angry after the first five that I never made it to those later chapters. This is the kind of book where you literally struggle paragraph to paragraph to make sense of what you are reading. One researcher's theory blends into the next, with no clues given as to how it all fits together. You can read a 30 page chapter and feel like you didn't learn a thing. The book is sorely lacking in examples and anecdotes. I have never written a review before but felt that fellow educators needed to know-- if there is anything you can do to take a curriculum course that doesn't require you to use this book, please do yourself a favor and make it happen.

A Brutal Existential Look at Ethics

Please be aware that this book also appeared under the title of Death and Judgment. If you are trying to read the whole series, read one or the other. This is the fourth novel in the Guido Brunetti series of mysteries.

As the book opens, it's late September and a Rumanian truck carrying lumber plunges off the road and into a rock face to open up a grisly scene of crushed and broken young women amid scattered pine boards. Paolo, Guido's wife, notes the story where it remains tucked in her memory until it can provide a critical clue.

The scene shifts to late November when prominent international lawyer Carlo Trevisan is found murdered on a late night train to Venice, where Trevisan lived. Vice-Questore Patta is annoyed that he had been called to the scene when Brunetti could not be reached. The mayor of Venice quickly calls the next morning to ask for a quick and quiet solution. Since there's no evidence of robbery, Brunetti must probe into motives. Who didn't like Trevisan?

Brunetti gets a quick leg up when Signorina Elletra's sister agrees to share information about the wife and daughter of the murdered man, who had been patients. When the crime comes up for discussion at home, Brunetti's daughter, Chiara, says she knows the daughter and agrees to ask around a bit.

When Chiara turns out to be good at snooping through gossiping with friends, there's a major confrontation in the Brunetti household concerning the ethics of such undercover methods employing a minor.

The case becomes more clouded when a successful accountant is found dead of an apparent suicide, but leaving behind the telephone number of the dead attorney in his address book. When the numbers are matched up with the records of the attorney's calling, they show a disturbing pattern . . . including many international calls and to a bar where the ladies rent by the hour in a rough part of town.

Trevisan's widow and her brother seem determined to shut off the police investigation. Frustrated that he's getting nowhere, Brunetti calls in a favor for a judge who tells him more about the background of the attorney and his family. Tracking through a tangled series of clues, the case takes one more twisted turn when the widow's brother is also killed.

The case breaks open quite suddenly when an unexpected clue is dropped into Brunetti's lap. From there, it's a question of how to accomplish justice. But is there any justice other than God's? You may be reminded of the myth of Sisyphus as you contemplate the ending of this existential look at the human condition.

For those who like action and mysteries evolving in ways that they can solve just ahead of the author's revelations, A Venetian Reckoning will be a disappointment. But for those who enjoy tough ethical questions, this is a very fine book. In either case, the book's primary limitation is Ms. Leon's customary dark view of human nature. In this book, she goes about as far as you can go and still slightly separate humans from vicious, uncaring predators.

Fast-paced and compelling with a wry touch of humour

If you have never been to Venice, this book will take you there. If you have, it will take you back. The setting adds attractive interst to a clever fast-moving thriller that includes just the right amount of detail to grab your interest whilst not being too tedious. Written in the third person, Commissario Guido Brunetti is our engaging non-heroic Italian sleuth, making a refreshing change from many of his contemporaries. His detective skills are reminiscent of a modern-day Hercule Poirot. Lovers of Agatha Christie will enjoy the comfortingly observant style of Donna Leon. She describes people and places, and sometimes food and wine, so that they live well throughout the book. The crime that Brunetti investigates is interesting with some nice twists that hold your interest right the way to the last page. I like this book because of its beautiful balance between good and bad, it attention to detail and sense of realism. Having only just discovered this author it seems a shame that many of her books are out of print.

Murder on the Mainland

It is the beginning of winter and a truck, coming from Serbia, crashes on the icy road in the Dolomites. Its passengers were ten women from the Balkans. All of them died. At about the same time, Avvocato Carlo Trevisan is murdered on a train heading for Venice. He is one of the top lawyers in Venice, with a list of clients that includes most of the high and mighty in the city. And in short order two more men, both of them connected to Trevisan, are murdered.
What connects these three people? Commissario Guido Brunetti goes to work, helped by the usual cast - Sergeante Vianello, Signorina Elettra Zorzi, and the whole questura - and supported by his wife Professoressa Paola Falier.
Brunetti works meticulously by checking out phone calls and then connecting them to locations. He finds the cross references and the connection to the crashed truck: women imported for sales into prostitution. Slowly but surely Brunetti uncovers the whole network and thus finds the person who committed the murders.

Thank heaven for Beatle scholarship that this book was written. Competent journalist Hunter Davies spent a year observing the Beatles and interviewing them in their own homes during the heady, fascinating year of 1967. He emerged with a time piece: the Beatles as they were at that time, reflecting on what came before and unaware of what was yet to come. A chapter describing the writing and recording of "With a Little Help From My Friends," "Getting Better," and "Magical Mystery Tour" offers unique and especially valuable glimpses of the Beatles at work. Chapters depicting the home life and personal outlook of each Beatle are also very interesting. I must also say that for an authorised biography, this is remarkably honest. Perceptive readers will be able to detect the whole truth here, and a fine introduction written by the author years later helps fill in any gaps. Apart from being hugely entertaining, this book is a tremendous boon to historians interested in the Beatles.

The Beatles as we loved them

This is a fabulous evocation of the fab four's rise to greatness, written with just the right amount of reverence and objectivity. Davies manages to ellicit some great anecdotes from people who were closest to The Beatles. Mimi, Paul's dad, the Harrisons, close friends, Fred Lennon (John's dad), Pete Best; they all get to have their say. The book is especially strong during the Hamburg years (loosely 59-62). Davies captures the growth in their popularity, attracting interesting characters along the way, yet having no fan base outside Liverpool and Hamburg. He demonstrates so vividly the growing desperation of the boys to make it big. Once the rollercoaster took off then the book is on trickier ground. Davies clearly wants to divulge stuff which The Beatles were not keen on him revealing (Davies was writing the book during 1967/early 68). For instance, Lennon was heavily into drugs at this time and Hunter Davies refers to John as being in a daze. Yes, you have to read between the lines! One of the strengths of this book is its matter-of-fact delivery. Although Davies is clearly a fan he still keeps his feet on the ground. The death of Brian Epstein is well-handled. Remember, this was written before all the Klein, Apple, Ono nonsense hit the fan. Yet Davies manages to convey a growing sense of isolation amongst the group. His pen-portraits of each member is uncannily (eerily) accurate, bearing in mind the general public thought The Beatles were a rock-solid national institution. The book is a cracker and loses a star of its rating only because of a rather mysterious lack of detail around Rubber Soul and Revolver. The rest is gear!

fab book on the Fab Four

I finished reading this book recently and I have to say it is an excellent book. When Hunter Davies first interviewed the Beatles for this book from 1967-1968, it was before all the bickering and fighting started and before Yoko came into the picture. Davies takes an inside look in thier home and family life, the songwriting process, and recording sessions. It also gives a pretty good background on their childhoods and how they all met. Not to mention a lot of great pictures, including some I never seen before. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because it is not a totally definative bio. Lots of things were left out because it upset thier family members. For example, it is not mentioned that Brian Epstein was homosexual because it upset his mother at the time. And some things were left out of John's childhood because it upset his aunt Mimi. Other than that, I reccomend that you read this book. It is smart and thouroughly researched. A must have for all Beatles fans!

Emilia Fox's reading sparkles with sophistication and intelligence. Her voice is arched but good humored and carefully pointed, with all the barbs subtly, and sometimes not so subtly, exposed. Character, however, is Fox's real strength. From the outset Mrs. Bennet's voice horrifies us, as it does her daughter, and we feel all Elizabeth's embarrassment at such a mother, not to mention Mr. Darcy's repugnance. Caroline Bingley's voice drips with unction when addressing Darcy, but communicates an acid tone with Eliza. Even Lady Catherine's crotchety hauteur and Mr. Collins's obsequiousness draw smiles. A skillful artist, Fox brings them all to life, rendering accessible to a wider audience all the author's good sense and humor. A finely crafted audio recording of the beloved classic

One is humbled to review a book considered a classic of world literature. What could I possibly say about PRIDE AND PREJUDICE that has not been scrutinized by scholars, exalted by enthusiasts or bemoaned by students who have been forced to read it and just don't get what all the fuss is about? Plenty, and that is one of its enduring charms. It is so many things to different people. I have read it every year for *ahem* more years than I wish to admit, and still laugh out loud at Austen's dry wit, wily social commentary and satisfying love story. It often tops international polls as the "the most loved" or "favorite book" of all time, numerous stage and screen adaptations continue to remind us of its incredible draw to the modern audience and its hero and heroine Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet may be the most famous romantic couple short of Romeo and Juliet. High praise indeed for a novel written almost two hundred years ago by a country clergyman's daughter, home schooled by her father and unexalted in her lifetime.

Set in the early nineteenth-century country village of Longbourn in Hertfordshire, the story revolves around the Bennet family and their five unmarried daughters. They are the first family of consequence in the village, unfortunately the Longbourn estate is entailed by default to a male heir, their cousin Mr. William Collins. This is distressful to Mrs. Bennet who knows that she must find husbands for her daughters or they shall all be destitute if her husband should die. Mr. Bennet is not as concerned and spends his time in his library away from his wife's idle chatter and social maneuvering. The second eldest daughter Elizabeth is spirited and confident, wanting only to marry for love. She teases her eldest sister Jane that she must catch a wealthy husband with her beauty and good nature to support them. The three younger sisters Mary, Catherine and Lydia hinder their sister's chances for a good match by inappropriate and unguarded behavior.

His friend Mr. Darcy is even richer with a great estate in Derbyshire, but he is proud and arrogant giving offense to all including Elizabeth by refusing to dance with her. She overhears him tell Bingley that she was only tolerable and not handsome enough to tempt him. This amuses and annoys her enough to repeat it to her friends and family. The whole community declares him the most disagreeable man, eaten up with pride. And thus the famous love story begins. How Mr. Darcy's pride will be humbled and Elizabeth's prejudices dissolved is one of the greatest stories of all time. Austen's astute characterizations and plot machinations never cease to amaze. Society has changed in two hundred years, but human nature, foibles and all, remains constant, much to our amusement and delight.

careless mistake in reading should not slipped by...

Emelia Fox is very enjoyable to listen to in her reading of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice. She is very familiar with the content and its expression, having played the part of Georgiana Darcy in the, now famous, A & E production of the film version of this book. There is at least one unfortunate mistake in her reading which Naxos should not have over-looked. It is the mis-reading of the work "innocent" as "ignorant" on the last CD, and alters the meaning of Darcy's compliment, rendering it senseless. One is left wondering how many times this type of error slips by, which the listener does not catch, in other Naxos productions.

Jean Wyrick is Professor Emerita of English at Colorado State University, where she was Director of Composition for 11 years. She has more than 25 years of experience teaching writing, training writing teachers, and designing writing/writing-across-the-curriculum programs. Her other textbooks include THE RINEHART READER and DISCOVERING IDEAS.
