They relate how maritime doctrine was developed within South Africa’s wider Special Forces capability and how joint operational approaches were configured with the South African Navy. This saw the development of a range of swimmer, reconnaissance, diving and boat operator training courses, along with the design of specialist raiding craft and amphibious assault platforms, which were originated to operate from the Navy’s existing shipping and submarines. All of which demonstrated the immense potential of this newly emergent force and the resourcefulness of its individual operators. Required to successfully complete a grueling selection process, the operators of 4 Recce were relentlessly tested to prove their physical and mental mettle, not to mention their leadership skills and initiative. Steyn and Söderlund’s chronological analysis of the operations undertaken by 4 Recce and the South African Navy is stunning to behold. They impartially detail the secret and specialized actions which saw both success and failure. From Cabinda on the West Coast to Tanzania on the East, 4 Recce, and whose existence and capability was largely kept secret even within the South African Defence Force, conducted numerous clandestine raids. They attacked shipping and strategic targets such as oil facilities, transport infrastructure and even ANC offices. And sometimes the raids did go wrong, spectacularly so in one instance when two operators were killed and Captain Wynand Du Toit was captured. South African Naval Special Warfare Comes Out of The Shadows

I read Peter Stiff’s “The Silent War” several years ago which touches on a number of South African maritime special operations, but found “Iron Fist from the Sea” to be a more focused and mature account of the maritime operations during the 1970’s and 1980’s. This is really a first rate book for the historian, history buff or modern operator (I can’t recall a single source that candidly describes: ignoring past achievements and experience, reinventing the wheel then blossoming with daring innovations and techniques.)
Despite the experiences of Second World War veterans, the South African Defense Force began reinventing the wheel of maritime special operations in the 1970’s with a submarine launched canoe raid, Operation Starlight, reminiscent of the SBS, Z Special Force or Royal Marine Boom Patrol (Cockleshell Heroes). However, soon the operators of the 4th Reconnaissance Commando and sailors of South African Navy with additional political and military support would be conducting highly sophisticated covert reconnaissance and raids far behind enemy lines in Africa using some very innovative techniques and equipment. Douw Steyn and Arne Soderlund bring the fascinating history of South African naval special warfare during the apartheid period out of the shadows.
The authors, who were personally involved in a number of the operations, set the scene with prior history, describe operator selection and development of submarines, support craft, strike boats and raiding craft before covering reconnaissance and raiding missions chronologically. Typically, the authors put the political and strategic issues into perspective, discuss preparations and training, then cover the execution of mission and discuss the results. They liven these fascinating accounts of attacking locomotives, mining dredges and cargo ships, destroying oil facilities and blowing bridges in Angola, Mozambique and Tanzania as well as operations with the Rhodesians with sometimes humorous or tragic details. The crocodiles did bite. The book also includes some interesting intelligence gathering missions conducted by operators on land and glimpses of other operations, capabilities and techniques. A good selection of photos, both black and white and color, support the narrative. However at nearly 500 pages, this otherwise sterling work lacks good maps and diagrams, though occasionally some diagrams for certain operations are included, which is surprising as the authors and had access to a tremendous amount of material and were experienced operators themselves. A second edition would benefit greatly from maps and diagrams of the infiltration, operation in the objective area and exfiltration. Also from a scale modeler’s perspective profiles of the Barracudas and Avalanches as well as photos of the operators with cut down RPD’s would be a bonus.
Again, a first rate book and well worth the price.

The book gets 5 stars because the unit, and the operations, are mind boggling. Nobody else has achieved anything close...not even the superpowers with all their technology, equipment, manpower...and with a bunch of other superpowers behind them.
The writing though, is straight out of the operational reports, and so sadly lacks any descriptions of characters, humour, personal experiences, reflective thoughts etc...which could have made this the blockbuster it should have been.
These men deserve it.

This review is long overdue. I have read this book cover to cover, and found myself referring to it on multiple occasions since. It is a unique window into the secret history of one of the world’s most elite and accomplished ‘naval’ (they are Army!) Special Forces units. There is no other book to compare as far as 4 Reconnaissance Regiment (4RR) goes.
Part of the famous ‘*Recce Commando*’ tradition, the 4th Reconnaissance Commando (later Reconnaissance Regiment) was formed in South Africa in the 1970s to conduct covert operations in southern Africa. The unit was almost immediately employed in clandestine actions. And during the Border War with Angola they deployed from submarines and fast boats to conduct reconnaissance, cross-beach, and commando raids. But their greatest claim (at least in my eyes) was the multiple ship attacks, sinking Soviet/Eastern Bloc supply ships supporting the Communist backed Angolan forces. Since WW2 it has been highly unusual for Special Forces to be called upon to attack ships in harbor, so this is a particularly rare story.
Iron Fist from the Sea is excellent for describing the intricate preparations and tactics employed in ‘seaward’ special operations. A single mission might involve a submarine, Strike Craft (missile boats), rigid hulled fast transports, inflatable boats, support ships and combat swimmers.
The book is impressive for its thoroughness, and even covers the abortive and less successful missions as well as the outstanding successes.
Outstanding.
