David Nihill was born in Dublin, Ireland. After graduating with a Master's Degree in Business in 2003, he moved to San Francisco where he worked for the Irish government helping startups expand rapidly. He has been involved with startup companies ever since. David is the Founder of FunnyBizz Conferences, a community conference series helping content creators tap into the power of storytelling, comedy, and improv to create better content. He has performed stand-up comedy at California's leading clubs including Cobbs, the Comedy Store, the Improv and the Punchline even though he strongly denies being a comedian and is well aware most people don't understand his accent. Creative and entertaining advice for improving public speaking skills.

As a stay-at-home mom and writer, I am definitely not the target audience for Do You Talk Funny. But I still somehow, amazingly, found this book to be relevant to my life, and I ended up really enjoying it. I think a big part of the book's appeal is that it is written with the novice in mind. I am pretty much terrified of public speaking, as Nihill was, so I could easily identify with his situation. Moreover, I absolutely appreciated his willingness to put himself out there so he could overcome his fear. I thought that was admirable. Right off the bat, I wanted to listen to him, because I felt like he was not only speaking from personal experience, but that he was genuinely interested in helping others to become better speakers and feel more comfortable in front of crowds.

His tips are pretty straightforward, and other reviewers have outlined most of them. So, for the sake of brevity, I'll just list some of the points that I found helpful. In general, I really liked the chapters on how to write with humor and how to deliver your message/speech/whatever effectively.

✻ Work in references to the local area whenever possible.
✻ Use words with attitude.
✻ Give clear takeaways.
✻ Reference items that got a good reaction earlier.
✻ Use different voices when possible.
✻ Always write in the present tense.
✻ Start strong, since the first 30 seconds make or break you with the audience.
✻ Try and get a quick laugh.
✻ Call the room, i.e., acknowledge the obvious (e.g., a sneeze, room temp)
✻ Make sure you are fully visible.
✻ Talk with your hands.
✻ Record your performances so you can analyze them later.
✻ Rehearse and practice; all the best performers do.
✻ Plan for audience laughter or participation.
✻ Memorize your jokes or speech using the Memory Palace technique.

Maybe these tips seem obvious to some people, but they weren't obvious to me. And I liked that Nihill presented them in a way that made it easy for me to incorporate them into my "non-performer" life. I think that's one of the things I liked best about this book: it all felt very doable. Nihill kept repeating that if you incorporate even one or two jokes into your business presentation, you are going to be better than 90% of the speakers out there. That's a pretty big payoff for only a little bit of effort.

And I loved this quote from Tim Ferris: “If you’re getting chased by a lion, you don’t need to run faster than the lion, just the people running with you. Speaking to other people is similar: you don’t need to be perfect, you just need to be better than a few others.” Nihill kept the stakes manageable enough that I was never intimidated. Perfect public speaking? No way. But adding one or two good jokes to a speech felt entirely possible.

Overall, I was truly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a non-threatening way to improve his public speaking skills.

A Review that's Not From His Family

I feel a little dumb for putting 5 stars when EVERY damn body does. Maybe they all know David or they're family or something. I'm not. I've seen him speak at his FunnyBiz event and that's what got me hooked. I'm a very minor public figure and I've attained this status through blood, guts, paid advertising and bald faced lies. I also used some of the ideas in this book to balance out my business hilarity. Read this. Follow David. Think funnier. It doesn't matter if you're a cubicle dummy or an internet dummy or a sales dummy, this book will help you in your career.
I wanna end with a joke but whatever... I'm just gonna leave this all limp and hangy. Still you should buy it.... you shoulda seen me before this.

Not just another self-help book, but a must read for anyone who wishes to be a Storyteller

I am an entrepreneur by profession who is skeptical about everything in the world, except of my own business ;). I was also initially skeptical of learning to be funny, which is the main theme of the book. I first learnt about the author when I attended one of his talks in San Francisco. In an hour, he was able to inspire me by showing how he learnt to be funny, and also sharing some awesome tactics as well as strategies to be funny. Amazing to learn that being funny has some underlying repeatable tactics.

This book is broken into 7 chapters, first starting with a story, and insights into how to use everyday life to find funny moments, and then using simple schemas to bring up spontaneous humor in almost any situation. To be funny however, you would need to practice and keep coming back to this book often, so use it like a reference book. I recommend highlighting parts that you want to use, and keep coming back to it. If you are a serious person like me, then this book gives you hope and practical insights that you can use. I would also recommend attending one of his talks or workshops if he is in your town; very entertaining to watch him speak but you will also get a handful of notes!

As a dual USA/NLD citizen considering changing countries this book is a treasure. There is so little information available regarding financial/tax issues for multi-country families I pre-ordered the book and am glad I did. It is written logically, and for those of us not daily immersed in financial matters Mr. Fisher has written this for easy comprehension. In addition, the book is quite comprehensive, causing me to consider issues I would never have known about. I strongly recommend this book to any who are coming to, or coming from the USA, in order to get a grip on the financial/tax issues that cross border life/work creates. It is a good planning tool as well for considering your next moves and living options.

Very thorough

This is a very specialized topic addressing a niche market. The author is very well qualified to provide advice on the matter. He has decades of experience supported by strong academic and professional credentials. He covers all relevant aspects of this domain in 14 brief, but detailed, and clearly written chapters. The author uses numerous lists, bullet points, diagrams to emphasize his main points.

Reading through the book, I found myself in agreement with the vast majority of what the author conveyed.

The one exception is where late in the book the author recommends against deferring Social Security until 70 because people don’t know when they are going to die. I remember making breakeven calculations regarding when to start withdrawing Social Security. And, depending on assumptions deferring vs. not deferring Social Security had a breakeven around 78 to 80 years old. Two simple questions can resolve the conundrum of deferring SS. Given one’s health at 65 or so and family background do they expect to live several years beyond 80? And, can they afford to defer SS until 70? If the answer is yes to both those questions, you may be a lot better off deferring. You figure as you age, one of the main concerns is running out of retirement and investment funds to support yourself. By withdrawing SS before 70 you are significantly increasing this risk. The author pointed out that if you die earlier (he did not specify when; but the “when” is around 78-80 years old as mentioned above) you have left money on the table. Absolutely true, but in terms of a gamble as the author phrases it, I would rather take on the risk of leaving a bit of money on the table if I leave this world earlier than I thought in exchanging of substantially reducing my risk of running out of investment assets if I lead a long life.

The above is a minor detail in an otherwise very good book on the subject. For the mentioned reason, I still give this book a 5 rating.

It is an overdue look at how expats can and should manage their wealth, particularly given the challenges posed by FACTA and IRS jurisdiction over foreign assets and income. At the same time, the book offers a useful guide to foreign citizens working in the US, as well as to non resident aliens with assets in the USA. Tax issues are covered in this book, but the ultimate contribution of this work is to highlight the strategic considerations that all those with cross border assets must take into account. Fisher notes, for example, that individuals considering moving to the US may want to dispose of foreign real estate holdings before moving to the USA, as to sell them during their residence in the States (or even after) may result in significant US tax exposure. Useful for financial advisors and the layman alike, this book represents a major step forward in addressing the complex financial needs of an underserved and growing population.

Mary Jo Bowie is the owner of Health Information Professional Services in Binghamton, New York, which has provided medical record consultative services for various health facilities for more than 25 years. She served as an instructor in Health Information Technology Programs for more than 20 years, teaching such courses as Inpatient Coding, Ambulatory Care Coding, Quality Assurance, Survey of Healthcare and Computers in Healthcare. Ms. Bowie is now the Health Information Management and Medical Coding program director at Mount Wachusett Community College and an associate professor. She develops all course content within the curriculum, including ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM/PCS courses, CPT/HCPCS courses, Introduction and Advanced Health Data courses. Ms. Bowie is a registered Health Information Administrator and an accredited Health Information Technician. She is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and is also an AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS-approved Train the Trainer. She served on the New York State Health Information Association Board of Directors from 1989 to 1991 and was education director and on the Ambulatory Coding Guideline Committee. Ms. Bowie was the New York State nominee for the National Award for Literacy Contribution to Profession, 1993 and 1994. She is a National and Regional speaker on ICD-9-CM, CPT and ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS, as well as a trusted course writer for Cengage Learning. Good book but No answers

I really like the easy to read text and "case studies" at the end of each chapter. The problem is.... there is NO ANSWER KEY!!! I am self studying for my CPC exam and it is really frustrating to not be able to look up the answers.
